This is a really wonderful, frenetic yet spacious jazz record. The first track from it is in Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, and aside from fitting the scene really well, I liked the song on its own so I looked it up. The album definitely peaks with that first track, but the whole thing is really solid.

My old client from a few years back had a brother in a semi-famous jazz band named The Bad Plus. They're from Minnesota and travel all over the world playing shows. Ethan, the pianist, is the one who I know.

Here's a few good covers that they do.

There's a bunch more on YouTube if you happen to like them.

Also, a few west cost tour dates..

I would urge anyone even slightly interested to see the Bad Plus. They did a cover of Aphex Twin's Flim when I saw them and had the drum pattern down pat. They're a fantastically tight live act.

It's been there from the beginning.. the weak Britpop headliners Friday; the rumors that DP was gonna play, that it was a done deal, then all of a sudden 'oops, no, not gonna happen'; and now the new album. It's all so obvious.

I grabbed a bunch of jazz, blues and r&b box sets with my freeleech tokens, so I'm digging into the roots of a ton of stuff now. Been working my way through the Atlantic R&B box and the Ken Burns box, doing about a disc a day for the past two or three days. Lots of good stuff and it's interesting to see how closely linked rock, jazz, blues, doo wop, and soul were back in those days.

Gotta echo the sentiment on The Bad Plus. I love them on record, would bet they're very good live.

Ha, nice. I fell into the roots thing a decade ago and never came back out of it. That Atlantic set is simply amazing; Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler were brilliant and Tom Dowd an equally brilliant producer. Those guys had incredible ears.

You all should check out Chris Potter. Great sax player with beautiful tone. I'm really digging his latest album Sirens and he's going on tour now.

I randomly just happened upon Tony Williams, a drummer for Miles Davis at one time apparently. The song Beyond Games of his, in particular. Fantastic.

He is one of, if not the, best drummers of all time. Check out Emergency by the Tony Williams Lifetime.

Another one you'd probably really like is Last Exit's self-titled first album. A truly brutal free jazz record.

That's the one I just grabbed! The song I mentioned is on it. Thanks.

I'm sure there's a Disney 7" out there somewhere with that song. That's your best bet as I doubt Scatman Crothers ever put that song on wax himself.

Can someone recommend a good album/compilation/collection or two that feature Helen Forest, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and the like?

I have a fair amount of Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Django Reinhardt in my collection already, but I need more 30s/40s/50s jazz in my life.

I especially like the mellow stuff, like this:

EDIT: I may have found exactly what I was looking for:
