RIP Les Paul
Jazz pioneers Les Paul and Mary Ford
not a jazz song but... it is my favorite song of all time
RIP Rashied Ali
Rashied Ali died on 12 August 2009 in a New York City hospital after suffering a heart attack and undergoing heart surgery.
He played with Coltrane during the saxophonist's final years, most notably on the groundbreaking duo album "Interstellar Space,'' on which Ali made his mark as a drummer who eschewed keeping time and instead improvised completely independent of structure.

For all the beat junkies.
Long live Nina!!
Sarah "Sassy" Vaughan's definitive version of Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life":
"Lush Life" sung by Sarah Vaughan (FREE STREAM)
It's astonishing to me that Strayhorn was just 16 when he wrote this song. Old soul.

The first jazz album I ever listened to.
To this day, Sonny Rollins is still my favorite jazz artist.
Found a 1st press of this at Amoeba for $8.99. Double sided deep groove with the w 63rd st address on the label RVG and the ear in the dead wax. It has some surface marks but sounds fantastic.
Hell to the mother fuckin yes on any and all praise being heaped upon this record:
I just realized that I have this album compressed and ready to dl on my computer. So here you go, people. An early xmas present:

I wish he would play the Catalina. Jazz Bakery is looking for a new venue it closed a few months ago. I need to see Sonny Rollins, Donald Byrd, and Freddie Hubbard soon.
Wow...I was just about to mention Grant Green. The two live albums above are incredible. He is another one of the great Blue Note artists. Here are some of his studio albums that also top notch. Idle Moments is a great straight ahead jazz album while Green is Beautiful and Carryin' On are soul jazz albums that were popular in the late 60's early 70's.

The mention of Grant Green reminded me of another great guitarist, Gabor Szabo.
I have these two albums on vinyl and recommend them both.

It's only been in the last month or so that I discovered that the Beastie Boys lifted this. I never bothered to look at the liner notes. I was crushed...it has been my favorite Beastie Boys song since Ill Communication came out. I always thought it was the best groove they'd ever came up with.
It was like finding out there isn't a Santa all over again.
Wow... this is one of the worst stories ever... and you've managed to insult one of the greatest musicians ever and didn't even know it.
Here's a stack of Blue Note albums that will make me forget the last post and helps to support the argument that Blue Note was and is the greatest jazz label of all time. Just a small taste.
