    Default All that Jazz

Hey maybe we shouldn't hide this stuff in the greatest bands/solo artists threads.

So here is the place to talk about ragtime, Dixieland, big bands, swing, bop, avant garde and free jazz, jazz-funk-rock fusion or whatever else.

Also in honor of the creation of this I think I am going to make tomorrow an all jazz day, and I recommend that you do the same.

Splendid idea. I'll start listening to Coltrane for the rest of the day. Maybe throw in some Eric Dolphy too.

I think I might hit a few things today. I was mentally going over the playlist for tomorrow and there just isn't time for everything.

I am thinking a Glenn Miller comp, Coltrane's Meditations, Davis' A Tribute to Jack Johnson (in solidarity with Patrick) and maybe a Nina Simone comp as her work is broader than just "jazz." If I get at least a few of those today I'll have time for what I want tomorrow.

Also I think I'll skip the Eric Dolphy this time; I just listened to his album last week. It is sad he died so young.

This is a legendary free jazz session. It's a $400 record to boot!

I recommended Don Cherry's Actions for Free Jazz in the last thread, so I'll listen to that today.... I also have a great Paul Flaherty/Chris Corsano record I'll spin. Maybe some Mats Gustaffson later.

Jazz is only fun for the people playing it.

    I'm in.

Does anyone know where to get a copy of Bill Evans' @ The Village Vanguard 10 disk set?
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

I completely disagree. When I lived in San Diego my friends and I used to get dressed up every now and then and head downtown to the Onyx Room for "Jazz Night" on Tuesdays. Everyone looked very sharp, drank expensive drinks, and it was a blast. Extremely talented musicians every week, one of my better memories of SD. We probably went 5-6 times back in the summer of '03.

I posted this before, but it could do with a second showing. These little Japanese school girls absolutely kill it here. Mingus would be smiling!

Anybody heard this? I ordered it randomly from Columbia House when I was 15, getting "Mingus" and "cannabis" confused. That's my intro to Mingus and jazz.

    Great! I'll repost these

They can all be found here: ESP Disk.

All kinds of good shit there. A lot of weird Throbbing Gristle type stuff, looooong before throbbing gristle was around; it was the first label in New York to give absolute freedom to the artists.

ESP Disk in general is always worth seeking out (not the new stuff that's been put out since the revival, but the old ones and reissues).

The fact that I just got the 11 CD boxed set of Dmitri Shostakovich's symphonies is making me waver on the tomorrow is an all jazz day thing.

Also the cover of Tears in Rain by This Ascension. Not a jazz band but cool that they used this image.
