    Default It's raining NPR

    (for me at least)

So I thought I’d give NPR a try for 6 months. I’m so over it. Here’s why NPR sucks:

    1. They don’t have commercials, but they waste 20 minutes per hour either requesting donations or explaining (in verbose detail) who each segment is brought to you by. Commercials are so much more interesting.

    2. Each segment is accompanied by additional overhead through a lengthy tag-line and description of what the segment is about. Segments don’t need taglines, nor do they need a 45 second introduction.

    3. Of the remaining time that’s left, half the stories are worthless. Who wants to hear about Crows, Leaf Collectors, or Mom Bloggers?

    4. The liberal tone gets old real quick. “This week President Obama invited a police officer and professor over for a beer. Did you know that George Washington and Abe Lincoln also drank beers in the White House? This certainly shows what type of president we’re dealing with here”

    5. The weekend crap sucks “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell me” may just be the lamest thing to ever come out of a radio. Same with those “comedy” shows.

Sorry NPR. I tried, I really did. But your 6 months is up.

I tried NPR. It lasted about 5 minutes. NPR is some of the worst radio I've ever heard. I LOVE RADIO!!!!!! The people seem to have a major lack of personality, love of life and interest in what they're talking about. Really, I've tried to listen a couple of times. The subject matter isn't really an issue for me, it's the delivery. The show host and guests just seem to have no life about them.

sounds like you've been listening to a lot of "all things considered", i don't really dig that show myself. too much fluff like the boring "mom bloggers" piece from last night. i'm not really into fresh air unless they are interviewing someone i really love either. and that splendid table lady annoys the pants off me.

i do like marketplace, bbc world news and the diane rehm show. also on the weekends, wait wait don't tell me & whadayaknow are fun, along with car talk and even a prarie home companion. here in arizona, on sundays we have those low down blues which is awesome. talk of the nation is pretty good, especially science fridays. (and roo, these shows all have different hosts and are produced nationwide, so you won't get the same thing with every show).

i guess i'm saying, i love npr. sorry you couldn't find anything worth listening to, but if you have only been listening on your way home from work to "all things considered", at least try a few podcasts of these shows. for example, there's not much that's liberal about marketplace. that's probably the best show they have in my opinion, diane rhem is a close second, but it's really hard for me to take the slow pace of her voice (which i know is due to medical issues, sorry, i'm going to hell i guess).

Fresh Air with Terry Gross is reason enough to claim NPR has greatness IMO. I wish I listened to that show more. Time to add a podcast.

I would agree that marketplace, bbc world news, and car talk are all interesting.

Marooko, you are right. The delivery is terrible. Even worse for me is all the time spent not on content. Like I said earlier, I feel like there is more filler on NPR than there are commercials on other stations. Perhaps podcasts are the way to go. Just need to filter out all the crappy stuff.

And Ivy, you can seriously listen to "wait wait don't tell me" for more than a minute?

i think wait wait don't tell me is funny. i also listen to whadyaknow and i have trouble distinguishing the two so what i'm about to say could be about one or the other. they get some interesting guests and get them to be kinda funny by quizzing them about shit they don't know anything about (the "not my job" segment or whatever), i generally like the part where they have to guess which news story is real and i also like the piano interludes. not to mention all the memos they read are pretty funny too. i dunno, it's dorky humour, but i like it.

while you may not enjoy the content, "mommy bloggers" and shit like that is still content and does not equal a commercial. filler fluff pieces are something entirely different from a commercial.

I love NPR. It's a beacon of good taste, cultural exploration, thoughtful journalism and reasoned discourse in an FM world that consists almost entirely of Jack FM and all that lovely Tejano crap with the accordion and the songs about the man who did her wrong, etc.

Sure, occassionally, they pick a story that only readers of Reader's Digest Large Print Edition could find compelling and, yes, the pledge breaks are annoying. Would you rather have a system like the BBC in Britain in which every person is required to pay for the service whether or not they watch or listen to BBC programming?

I think Wait Wait Don't Tell Me (and it's British counterpart the name of which I can't recall right now) is frequently hilarious. I'll give you this, Whad'Ya Know? with Michael Feldman (produced by PRI) is a torturous affair. That is one NPR program I cannot and will not stand. I'd rather circle through the FM dial for 2 hours than listen to the incredibly dull Feldman.

NPR is the only radio station I can tolerate in my car. I'll take this programming with "bad delivery" over the same 10 shitty "hits" that rotate on the rest of the stations.

and some people have better delivery than others. for example, kai risdal on marketplace has great delivery. terry gross has a nice voice too. overall though, i agree it is a slower pace, but i like that. i don't want to feel rushed through a bunch of headlines, i want to hear stories, even if it's something i wouldn't normally care about (mommy bloggers). plus, it's better than feeling like i'm CONSTANTLY BEING YELLED AT like other radio announcers.

i can't stand that lady who reports from france though, she always sounds pissed off even if it's a positive story. and i don't like melissa block much, my dad HATES her cause she reads everything in such a cutesy fashion, it makes the serious stuff seem less serious.

I bet we could convince Jad and Robert to make "(Best Show Ever)" the tagline if our emails were convincing enough.
