Look past the music . . . that was brilliant.

The laugh at the end will give me dreams of Joshua trees and sunsets tonight.

    It was a goood article.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

The song that was playing was being projected from Huell's mind.
Yeah, he was really that high!

What's the deal with this guy? I downloaded that Coachella special, and he made me want to claw my brain out. Do you watch for the kitch factor, or is this actually a popular show over there?

the guy is a legend out here. he can be annoying, but there's no arguing his love of California. he's like....uhhh... that guitarist rollerblader on Venice beach. A true Californian, regardless of if you like him or not. when im channel surfing and it is on i might watch a bit. Some of his topics are quite interesting

for me it started out as a joke. my friend matt happens to do a spot-on impersonation of him. a couple years ago he was doing the voice and it made me laugh so hard, so i started watching some videos of him online. soon enough i was getting a season pass of CA Gold on tivo. i've come to genuinely enjoy the episodes. he will cover things in california i never new existed, like salvation mountain, and i want to go visit them now. and then he'll do episodes on how THERE'S A MILLION LADYBUGS ON THAT TREE OVER THERE!!!! and those are just fucking hilarious cause he's SO EXCITED about it. but he's just been doing this forever. i was telling my mom a couple months ago about how i'm obsessed with this show now and she said she used to watch it at home while raising us back in the day. he is such a staple of the local california livelihood.

also interesting... there's a science to how an interviewee should act on the show. you kind of just shut up and let huell ask the questions at his own pace, and don't really give out more info than what he asked for. i was just watching an episode where he visits this old artsy run down house/museum built into the side of a hill and the tour guide was SO fucking annoying. you could tell he was annoying huell as well. he would not stop talking and totally monopolized the interview.

It's not for the kitsch factor. He genuinely is an awesome person that I admire and he genuinely puts on a show that I love. Granted -- I'm kind of a nerd for California history and geography and "touristy" places and the little interesting nooks and crannies of my local area that nobody pays attention to, so that's the biggest attraction to the show for me. But Huell's voice and mannerisms and over-enthusiasm for everything around him is definitely part of the charm. Maybe it takes a little getting used to. But he's definitely a legend around here, like whynotsmile said. And I sincerely wish there were more people in the world as excited about life as Huell.

By the way... that video = fucking greatness.

Hmmm...we've got a guy in AZ named Pat McMahon who's been on the air in some form since the 50's, but he's...er... professional.

That's cool, I guess. I mean at least he's enthusiastic. He could be like Larry King and be both uninformed and bored. But would it kill him to do some research? It just seems like you could do the same show by just taking a 5 year old to new places and shooting his reactions. (Actually, that's a fucking brilliant idea for a travel show.)

To be fair, I'm basing this off of one episode.

First of all, I don't agree about South Park. There's a lot of intricate shit going on in most South Park episodes and I'd rather have my synapses firing properly to process it all. Otherwise, you're just giggling at the word "fishsticks".

But I have never understood the point of getting high to make something lousy seem better. Why not just watch something better in the first place? There is a time and place to get high, and doing it in front of the TV seems like a dreadful use of time. I rarely do it anymore unless I'm out in nature. I got sick of waking up thinking "Did you really eat coco puffs and watch The Goonies last night?" If somethings not good enough to watch/listen to/eat sober, then I don't want to waste an expensive high on it.

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I realize that the Coachella episode really was the worst possible episode to be introduced to Huell. The guy is actually completely brilliant, for one thing... if you read an interview with him you'll see. But he does much more thought-provoking programs when he's not at a big rediculously hedonistic place like Coachella.

That said though, the Coachella episode was obviously my favorite Huell Howser episode of all time

And I've never watched Huell when I was high... but I must say that it does sound fitting.

    I agree with this.

I find Huell's childish antics to be refreshing. All the travel people these days seem to be rather douchey. I like Huell's simpleness.

I'm not saying HH is crappy and drugs make him tolerable. I'm saying HH is genuis. He is a mystic. His message is rich and can be understood on many levels, some of which can be accessed by freeing the constraints of the mind.
