Default Dear Coachella: start selling live recordings

    www.livebonnaroo.com

I created this thread to call attention to this awesome music store, where Bonnaroo sells live recordings from the festival. And to say that Coachella should consider doing something like this. I bet a lot of people would be willing to pay money for soundboard quality recordings from the festival. So yeah, great idea.

Totally agree. Some of the best times of my life have been at Coachella, and to be able to buy high quality recordings of the bands that helped make those memories, that would be incredible.

Artists have to agree to this and it can get tricky. So lets say they did do this and you expected all the big names to have recordings, think again. And indulge me as to how many artists they are selling recordings of that you would pay for or want honestly.

Given our failure at grabbing the webcast this year, I don't think it's an outlandish proposition anymore.

If you bothered to look at the Bonnaroo store, you'd notice it has a good selection of impressive bands. Furthermore, Both the Roo and Lollapalooza do this, there's no reason Coachella can't. Sure you won't get everything you want, but it would still be a cool thing to do.

the only reason Bonnaroo has this is they have many "jam bands" perform, and these "jam bands" are usually 90% taper friendly, meaning they don't mind audience members taping and trading their performances, and having their sets professionally recorded and sold to fans in some cases (as in livebonnaroo.com). The majority of bands at Coachella don't fit that mold, so it's not worth the effort.

This would be amazing. They should also copy Bonnaroo in making a new highlights DVD every year, not once every 6 years or so.
Let's go on a livin' spree!

They should also copy Bonnaroo in having a free-for-all camping and in/outs and it should be in Tennessee.

Coachella did this in the past we bought the depeche mode sound board recording from the merch booth. You received a download key which expired 1 year from the purchase date. When I finally got around to doing it didn't work so I never got to hear my purchase!!! I think that it was only main stage headliners cuz I was disappointed we couldn't get one of massive attack. It would be lovely to have some of these chella performances as an audible keep sake and not just the headliners!!!

That Depeche Mode recording was more DM's doing than Coachella's....DM offered live recordings of their whole tour that year, so they obviously had one of their Coachella performance available. It wasn't like Coachella asked DM if they could sell the recording, it was available through DM themselves. Same with the Pixies and their live CD from Coachella back in 2004.

As someone pointed out Lolla does this too, and they are not focused on jam bands. Plus Bonnaroo has far less jam bands then they used to have, they have much more crossover with Coachella lately. It is a cheap way to open up a new revenue stream, and if some bands don't want it than fine they can opt out. I think the majority of lower billed bands would appreciate the added revenue and promotion that would come from this.

Coachella sold a DVD back in 2006....it was more like the "Coachella: the Movie" and had performances of bands from 1999-2005. I wouldn't expect anything like that again for a while.

Erik. I've been accused of being a ridiculous Bonnaroo defender, but your status as a Coachella defender completely outdoes me.

This is a good idea. Bands can opt out if they don't want to be included. Being a taper-friendly band really doesn't have much to do with this. Bonnaroo doesn't give the recordings away. I don't see how your point is valid here.

And Flapjacks did not prove your point. You just continue to go with your talking points without even looking at the facts. Whether you want to admit it or not, Bonnaroo is not that big of a jam band festival anymore. I think Rothbury has taken the lead in that regard. I didn't see one jam band this weekend it my schedule was pretty packed.

When someone offers up a suggestion to improve Coachella, your initial reaction is to shoot it down. I bet you'd be in the minority as far as this goes. I mean, who wouldn't like soundboard-quality tapings available to purchase? I've purchased the Calexico, Broken Social Scene and Ozomatil recordings and I love that I had that option. We're not saying Coachella is a horrible festival because they don't offer this, but it's just a nice thing that we feel would make it that much better.

Also, what leads you to believe there won't be another Coachella movie or DVD when we know most sets have been recorded each and every year?

Can't you at least be a fan and root for some of this stuff to happen, or do you really just hate every other reference to another festival?

Fax, it's all an illusion. I don't know if he has to keep up his board persona or what. This is exactly what Menik wrote on Facebook a few days ago.

loving all these bonnaroo bootlegs...one of these years...

Hate to call you out like that, Erik, but you DID write that. And it surprised me so that's why I remember it.
