people compare radiohead and muse? this is strange to me. i listen to thom for insightful, slightly sarcastic unique whinings & muse for operatic style explosions of emotion. apples & oranges. when i first heard muse, i thought queen, not radiohead.

Does any think or have any info if the dates are real? I bet the 2009 dates are right before the first U2 show in New York which is 9/22/09. Cuz after the U2 tour the band is headed to tour Europe. My guess is if its real, the Wiltern show is going to be around 9/15/09. Or maybe I'm just being hopefuly since my board name contains the word Muse....
Let's compare Trent Reznor and Perry Farrell. They both front U.S. rock bands.
If you're this argumentitive in a few hours I may just have to slap you. Lol.
The more I listen to both bands, the less they sound alike. Especially musically. And Bellamy can hit much higher notes (or at least has attempted to more often on albums) than Thom. If you think I'm wrong, listen to Micro Cuts off of Origin of Symmetry. A tad pretentious (just because you can doesn't mean you should) but it's an interesting listen nonetheless.
it's not just a matter of hitting the notes. the muse guy has WAY more air when he sings than thom. like exponentially. he hits those high notes with power while thom tends to sound like he's reaching a bit more.

that's fairly normal though. you have to find breaks in longer phrases for breaths sometimes. it would be nice if they could edit some of it out, but with his power, it's a bit unavoidable.
he has more breath underneath the note regardless. and you can hear that for the most part, he's not reaching up to the note but rather falling on top of it (sorry if that doesn't make sense). generally when you're singing higher notes, people tend to clench their body & mouth (and ultimately their air) to try and squeeze out that high note as if they are reaching UP to it. you really should be taking as much breath as possible, which then is aided by some sort of abrubt body movement like throwing your arms or doing a quick squat. that movement then helps you push the note out freely while the important parts of your body (mouth, throat & stomach) become relaxed because you've tricked the tension into moving into a non-important part of your body. the high note then just falls out easily and ultimately with more breath as a result instead of being squeezed out with a smaller amount of breath.
you can also tell by the roundness of the sound and the sheer volume. thom could never come close to that volume. thom definitely has had some training to use his air & raise his soft pallette, but for whatever reason, his higher notes are a bit more closed off & have less air than the muse guy.
not to mention muse guy is much better about holding out vowels than thom. singing is about air and it's about vowels. if you ever have to extend a note, it should always be the vowel sound you are extending, unless you are trying to make some sort of effect or point.
i'm sure someone with more training & talent than me could better articulate that, but those are my thoughts. i know that muse is one of my favourites to sing along to simply because i get to use all my vocal training from my former teacher, who was an opera singer. it's very operatic and has all sorts of fun low-to-high parts with fun vowels to hold

she was really good at explaining things based on how YOU understand them. i'm a visual person, so she always had me doing visual excercises to picture myself landing freely on a note or to make arm movements to pretend like i was pulling the note from the back of my head up & over.
she also spent years trying to get me to raise my soft pallette. it wasn't until she told me to imagine that my favourite movie star had just fallen through the ceiliing. i gasped in surprise and she said "that's it!". when you gasp and you feel your eyes raise and your cheekbones rise, you can also feel your soft pallette lifting. when you're singing, this should be raised at all time to let as much air pass through as possible.

My friend's boyfriend listens to Radiohead and Muse. Any time I'm in his car and a Muse song comes on, the first thing I always think is "Jesus, this is the worst Radiohead song I've ever heard. What album is this even on?" before I realize that it's Muse.
And then you hear Stockholm Syndrome and think "Damn, I've never heard Jonny play the guitar like that, this guy is fucking amazing" and realize it's Muse.
More like "Didn't the 90s thankfully end close to ten years ago? And why does this guy imitate the exact vocal inflections of Thom Yorke?"
