The piano break 58 seconds in, love it. Really dig the ending as well. I've always wanted Muse to expand on their heavier influences so bring on the crunchy riffs. Choir starts to sound cheesy as the song goes on. Lyrics are pretty awful, not really anything else to say about that. "I light the fuse and I'm never gonna lose" sounds like a line from Motley Crue or something.

Just imagine how bad their American setlists are gonna be now. A healthy amount of 2nd Law and Resistance, the hits from black holes, and if we're lucky, 2 songs from absolution or origins.

    November 18 - Slayer
    November 19 - eyehategod
    December 4 - Behemoth
    January 30 - Behemoth
    February 3 - Zola Jesus
    February 6 - Sleep

Probably Stockholm, but yeah... three or four old* songs and that's it.

Oh yeah, Stockholm... I think whenever that one finally goes away is when Muse should be completely written off. Maybe I'm being way too harsh way too soon, but when the only things heard so far are Olympic-grade cheese and fucking dubstep, I can't see anything redeeming in this album era yet.

I'll wait till the album comes out and see what their setlists are like. A big part of me really wants them to redeem themselves.

The actual lyrics to Survival. Oh dear God help us all.

    Race, life is race
    And I am gonna win
    Yes, I am gonna win
    I'll light the fuse
    And I'll never lose
    And I choose to survive
    Whatever it takes
    You won't pull ahead
    I'll keep up the pace
And I will reveal my strength to the whole human race
Yes, I am prepared to stay alive
    I won't forgive
    Vengeance is mine,
And I wont give in because I choose to thrive

And I am going to win

    --- GUITAR SOLO---

    Race, it's a race
And I'm gonna win, Yes I am gonna win
And I will light the fuse
    And I'll never lose
    And I choose to survive
    Whatever it takes
    You won't pull ahead
Because I'll keep up the pace
And I will reveal my strength to the whole human race
Yes I am going to win.

    Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
    Win! Win! Win! Win!
    YES I'M GOING TO WIN.

Muse has always had terrible lyrics, this is nothing new.

I'd like to say that I think the instrumentation on Surival is great. Really heavy riffs and percussion. I also enjoy Matt's vocals.

Trying to hear beyond the background vocals and lyrics...

Not always. There were albums recorded before 2005.

Yeah this is pretty much how I feel.

Obviously I like Muse a lot, but Guiding Light and Neutron Star Collision are two recent songs of theirs that really turned me off to the band for a while. This new one sounded completely retarded at first but has grown on me a bit. It's still silly as shit but an enjoyable song nonetheless. Muse is completely capable of creating worse, much more unforgivable music.

I think the Olympics should try to top Beijing's show by having thousands of people do the choir vocals and make it the most over the top performance of all time.

A great standard to hold them too. Seems like us older fans are at/near the same place as Boourns...done with this band. It's a shame as they are so fucking amazing live (well, when not playing their "worse, much more unforgivable music," that is).

That might've come out wrong, the two songs I mentioned are the only "worse, unforgivable" songs that I don't think Survival compares to. I, like most of you, view The Resistance as their least compelling work and showed me they are actually capable of making music I don't like(pretty flawless track record beforehand in my eyes. Hell, most of the tracks that have had the most replay power with me are their old b-sides). The 2nd Law undoubtedly isn't going to be a return to full form, but I'm still looking forward to it. Coming after Neutron Star Collision, Kate Hudson, and the baby I didn't know what to expect it could've been a lot worse--though it still might be. It sounds heavier and high energy so far and I think that could benefit their live show.

On the topic of their live show, it really surprised me that Outside Lands, gig #10 I've seen since 2006, was the best experience so far. It will really take a complete turd of an album + setlists for me to stop wanting to see them.

Not me. I am completely and totally done with them, both live and on record. Soma in '06 and the Forum in '07 were both flawless shows, and I'm fine with just leaving my memories of them at that.
    12/04 - Angel Olson - El Rey (?)
    12/06 - Dr. John - Royce Hall (?)
    12/14 - Cat Stevens - Nokia
    12/20 - Stevie Wonder - Forum (?)
    1/10 - Flesh Eaters - Echoplex (?)

I'm with you on this one. I've seen just about every song I ever wanted to see live form them and seeing Citizen Erased at lolla was one of my favorite moments from the fest last year. That being said, I have such low expectations for the new album and I hated The Resistance so I'm just gonna remember that last show and forget about any future ones.

Gotta say, Resistance aside, Lolla performance was one of my favorite live shows I've ever seen. I'll have to see how I feel about the new one...survival is one of the lamest songs I've heard this year.

"We went to see Skrillex in Camden around October," he says. "We went, 'Fuck, it's so heavy,' loved it. I was like a full metal gig, they had circles of death, people were moshing, I hadn't seen a reaction like that to electronic music before. We took inspiration and came up with 'The 2nd Law: Unsustainable'."

"Some of that hard dubstep and brostep coming from America, is capturing the imagination," singer Matt Bellamy adds. "The moshpit has moved from guitars and gone towards the laptop, so with that song we're trying to see if we can challenge the laptop. We created something that was dubsteppy but we wanted to see if we could do it with real instruments. We wanted to ask, 'Can rock bands compete with what these guys are doing?'"

I want distinctions of what hard dubstep and brostep is.

The tail end statement is officially Muse signing off.
