I don't think you'll ever top the original:
But all the same, I like Tunstall's version a lot.
Two of my favorite covers have to be Muse's take on Frankie Valli 's "Can't Take My Eyes off You" and Franz Ferdinand's take on Gwen Stefani's "What You Waiting For." Brilliant (in my opinion)!
I also do like a few other covers that FF has done as well, like The Beatles' "It Won't Be Long" (if you don't mind them putting their own spin) and Britney's "Womanizer". Kaiser Chiefs have a pretty good rendition of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" as well.
I can't get this cover out of my head...

Florence and the Machine's album is disappointing overall, but the lady belts it out, for sure.
Cover of Candi Staton's You've Got The Love.
not sure if this necessarily qualifies as "really f*cking good," but when I saw them perform a cover of the Eurythmics 'Here Comes the Rain Again' it was a cover that stuck with me. I think I saw them perform the song either at the Glass House in 2003 or at the El Rey in 2001. Couldn't find a setlist for either, but I will guess it was the El Rey show. Here's a version from a show at Emo's on Nov. 10, 2001....

This probably won't last long on youtube, but...
Arcade Fire's short, sweet, and slightly knowing partial cover of Cyndi Lauper's Money Changes Everything.

This dreadful song was a number 1 hit all across Europe in 1977:
And, this, is how you turn a ridiculous disco confection by a Spanish flamenco/disco group into pure sex (warning: contains severe theramin abuse):
The original was perfect, dammit.
Nonsense.
I really like Information Society's version of "Are Friends Electric?"
and general off the wall versions of songs I always enjoy

I looked for this thread when that Thom Yorke "All For the Best" cover was released and couldn't find it. Looked likes no one has posted yet so here goes:

A pretty gorgeous track, imo. Here's the original:
awesome
now I'm way partial to Tortoise, they are my favorite band ever, but I believe they (along with B'P'B) did an excellent job on this one.
I'd have to say I even like this better than Springsteen's original.. i can already hear the nays of the naysayers
Rhythm is a dancer.
Def not better than the original, but they played it with their own style;
"The first time I heard the new single off the Bravery album, I actually cried, and I do not even remember the name of that damn song. It reminded me of this girl I am in love with." - kroqken
I'm sure this was probably on the NIN thread but I don't read it...

Which reminds me
Finally, there used to be a website called "The Art Of The Mixtape" where they had a challenge to make a 90 min daisy chain of covers. That is, you start with a cover, then the next song is by the artist that was covered in the last song and so on...the last song would be a cover of a song by the first artist. I was never able to get very far.

I'll jump on that JD covers bandwagon
Here's another one I was quite surprised to hear done well.
i think these are pretty much "love it or hate it" but they make me smile
Well, we have failed as a message board. We almost got to 6 pages without mentioning this:
