I have my tickets and now all I have to do is book a rental car to drive from Portland to Seattle. I am not sure how far away my friend I am staying with lives from Capital Hill, but I don't think it's too far.
Kreutz I am going to this. What is Earth? I love Built to Spill.

Earth are an amazing droney heavy doom band. The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull was one of the best albums of last year, I think.

And you're moving to SF? Is the message board playing music chairs or something?

One good band on a side stage does not a festival make.

However, I am very excited for the Japandroids. I just wish they weren't playing during the middle of Sonic Youth and they should totally be playing Neumos, not the baby stage.

Disapointing? Really? You didn't like Deerhunter? Black Lips? Spinerette? The Jesus Lizard? None of them? I saw The Black Lips and Deerhunter together the other night in Vancouver and both bands were great.

Here's what I had to say about yesterday:

The Dutchess and the Duke: For what they are, they were pretty good.
Spinnerette: Okay, but nothing I need to see again.
The Black Lips: Totally meh and sounded WAY too much like mid-nineties punk.
Deerhunter: Technical difficulties with their microphone altered their setlist, but what they did play begs the question "Why are you all SO in love with them?"
Earth: Pretty good, but WAY too slow.
They Live: Entertaining for about 10 minutes, though they did make fun of Seattle crowds, which was hilarious cuz the crowd just didn't get it.
The Jesus Lizard: They would have been a lot cooler if we were as drunk as the lead singer.

The only saving grace is that I now know that I never need to go out of my way to see any of these bands ever again.
The best/funniest part of Deerhunter's set was when the mustached guy from the Black Lips came on stage with a bottle of Maker's Mark and passed it off to one of the members of Deerhunter. Before running offstage he began to spout some nonsense into the microphone while Deerhunter played on. The guys from Deerhunter drank from that bottle the rest of their set.

Here's a pic of what I was talking about above:

Alright, today was an improvement over yesterday. However, if I had to rate the festival overall, I would give it a C.

We got into the fest at 3pm and left at midnight.

Hotels: They were fun. Kind of like surfer-pop rock. Both the band and the crowd were into it.
Girls: We enjoyed their set also. Kind of dreamy guitar driven pop. In their final minutes, they covered Dream Lover by Ricky Nelson, which was a real treat.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: The few songs we could stand were as lame as the name of their band.
New Faces: I can sort of see why these youngsters are going places, but all of their songs would just end unexpectedly, the crowd would be all WTF and then clap/cheer.
Pela: Only listened to a couple of their crappy songs.
The Maldives: Country/blues performed by 9 people. I liked it. There was 5 guitarists (1 played slide guitar), a banjo/accordion player, a fiddle player and 2 drummers.
The Thermals: They were okay, Erika thought that the lead singer sounded a little like a young Billie Joe. We ate dinner (Thai food) during their set.
Truckasaurus: There are so many other electronic acts out there doing this so much better.
Gossip: I really enjoyed their set. They sounded good, the crowd liked them and they would throw in little mini covers during their songs, like Psycho Killer, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and a couple others too.
Sonic Youth: We only listened to 3-4 songs, cuz we wanted to get over to the Japandroids. They sounded like they actually wanted be there, unlike when we saw them at Lollapalooza '95 (the jesus Lizard was there that day too). I didn't feel bad about leaving during their set because nothing is going to top when I saw them at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in '96.
Japandroids: Really, really good. The crowd was into it, as was the band. They came on late, so they kept having to negotiate for more time, which was sort of a drag, but it helped solidify our resolve. I only wish I was going to be in town to see them at the free KEXP BBQ (Phish weekend).

I am sorry to say that I forgot my camera in the car, I know FAIL...there was a TON of press all over the place, so I will post some of their pics as they show up on the interwebs.

Beyond the abundance of mediocrity, another thing that bothered us was the way that most everyone in attendance was there for the Block Party aspect of the Fest and prolly didn't attend concerts that often, which meant that there was quite a lot of BS to wade through.

Yeah, I know We had just got some coffee before their set, but even so, all of their songs sounded like the interludes of other songs. However, they are talented and sounded good
