ok, so i seriously need some advice. im planning on buying an original Owen piece. It will most likely be oil on canvas. how do i take care of it? should i not display it? should i just get a print? what about light. incandescent, fluorescent, sun light?

Well, if you get the oil canvass, you should probably rent an Englishman in a suit to stand by the painting during your business hours. You should also get one of those red rope barricades with golden posts and make a little square around the painting and the Englishman.

Well that's pretty much a given, but still solid advice. Except the Englishman is gonna be outside the red ropes. That will ensure no one gets too close.

Its like the Infinite Monkey Theorem, if you put X amount of monkeys in a room with a typewriter and ask them to give you Shakespeare 99% of them will fling their shit at you while the other 1% will masturbate in the corner.

Oil on canvas is one of the easier media to maintain, much easier than prints. Over time, temperature/humidity, exposure to UV light and pollutants are the primary concerns in taking care of most art. But if you're just worried about the painting lasting for your lifetime, you don't need to do too much.

To get technical, the ideal conditions for most art are about 50% relative humidity, 70 degrees, total air filtration (no exterior pollutants), no light, no exposure to human pollutants (exhaled CO2, skin oils, etc).

Obviously, creating an ideal situation for art would mean that no one would ever get to actually enjoy the art, so it's a matter of finding a balance between taking care of the art and accessibility. If you do get a print, I recommend framing it under UV-protective glass, which will help a lot. For most art, an easy thing to do is to hang it away from direct sunlight. And pay a good framer and specify you want archival materials -- cheap framers often use all sorts of corrosive adhesives and matting when framing a piece for hanging.
