Thread: My Bloody Valentine

I'm sure there is variance to a jet engine's sound. And it was more than 10 minutes into PE's set. I don't even care for Public Enemy, but when I went to check it out, people couldn't fully enjoy PE because they were befuddled/annoyed at what was happening at the Main stage.

Look, I take MBV's sonic holocaust to be analogous to Warhol's Campbell's soup, that is to say, extremely pretentious and contrived. Except in the case of Warhol, much more original.

Does MBV perform with earplugs? Or do they just subject all the lame fools who are willing to lose their hearing to it? Do people who love MBV even play guitar w/pedals. Because as a member of a band, it's much to easy to create an 'blasting aural landscape', much to easy. Which brings me to my point again, what would have made this a bad show, since its obviously not about musicianship. And please don't say it is about musicianship, because you're really are going to drive me nuts.

First of all, I did go see the whole Horrors set.
Secondly, I was at a fucking Beer tent on the Public Enemy side, but couldn't hear them at all because of MBV.
Thirdly, Of course it felt great when they returned to the 'real' song. That's like saying it felt great to stick my head out of the water after its been submerged for three minutes.

You know what MBV would have absolutely loved? The response that would have given them a hard on? If it had been almost completely silent after that song? I know their type. Artists for the sake of art, not artists for the sake of expressing an emotion. Posers.

If you're going to make art analogies, learn something about art first. I'm sorry MBV wasn't Norman Rockwell to you. Maybe you should stick to Bonnaroo.

If you don't think Kevin Shields and the members of MBV are good musicians there is no point in continuing this conversation. I am sure you and your band members are obviously way more talented and will be remembered and followed for many more years to come.

    In conclusion, music rules.

Please don't associate Bonnaroo with this guy, Bonnaroo is (like Coachella) about an eclectic mix of musical styles and personal acceptance. Zediac would most likely find too much to complain about.

But see- that's your own journey with it! There is certainly nothing wrong with not really caring, or even not really liking that part of the show. Everyone reacts differently to it. We might even go so far as to say some of the band members might even feel the exact same way about it as you do. Your reaction, or lack thereof, over the holocaust is just as valid as anyone who got carried away on the cloud of noise and transported to a completely different world.

My lack of understanding in this whole conversation is for the people who could not find anything to like about the show and did not realize that this was, without doubt, one of the best if not the best performance of the weekend.

I love, LOVE, how my favorite band pissed off 40,000 people on Sunday. Wouldn't have had it any other way.

Hahahaha, suck on it, Flava Flav. I got my transcendent MBV experience and YOU had to listen to it!

    Mature? No. Awesome? Yes.

Admission time- I wandered over to PE afterwards and found them the perfect way to recover from MBV. Their set had not been going on that long at all so I doubt that MBV intruded too much.

I saw PE in their heyday and enjoyed it. They weren't up to par with that performance at Coachella, but it was still good. If anything, zediac, you should be mad at all the fairweather fans who began bailing from PE's set to go see the Cure. I coulda walked up to the front of the stage by the end of their set if I wanted to.

No shit. My wife is pregnant yet again and we had to miss Coachella this year (she's due next week and I didn't want to take a chance on missing out on the birth). Because I wasn't going, I knew that I shouldn't come on the mb until after the show. I guess the general consensus is that it was yet another great year (what a surprise with that lineup). I was completely bummed about missing MBV, Leonard Cohen and Macca, among others, but got lucky with the MBV Austin performance.

I guess I can understand how some people wouldn't like it but I certainly can't see anyone openly advocating the YYYs over MBV to close out the festival (as the OP did, i believe). Especially after the utter worthlessness of the vast majority of It's Blitz. Whatever, to each his/her own. But for me, seeing MBV from 12-15 feet away was an experience I'll never forget. I took a friend who's only exposure to MBV had been "Sometimes" in Lost in Translation. He just kept looking at me and smiling with a "I can't believe this" look on his face. Again, it was transcendent, surpassing Fugazi for "loudest band I've ever seen live".

How've you been bmack? PJ is set to headline ACL, which I'm sure you're aware of. If you're in Austin for the show, hit me up via IM and I'll buy you a beer at the festival.

Happy 20th birthday, Loveless. If Kevin Shields went crazy trying to do something better, he should be able to take some small comfort in knowing that 20 years later, no one else* has been able to release a better album, either.

*Ask me on another day, and I'll probably say OK Computer and/or Funeral were better.

My Bloody Valentine is still probably the best concert I've seen in my whole life thus far.

I watched the Chella set, but went to the merch table to pick up discounted stuff during the "halocaust" bit. Generally enjoyed though I'm not a crazy fan.
