new wilco album/tour

OK, so I got sidetracked last night and never got around to doing my Wilco research. But im scrolling through my itunes and just saw that I have A Ghost is Born on here! WTF??

Im listening to Handshake Drugs now and it makes me feel all warm inside. I WILL get to know Wilco before Bonnaroo goddammit

Warning: Avoid the noise at the end of Less Than You Think....You'll know what I mean when you get there. It's a fine song but no need for the noise at the end unless you are wondering where you can find a migrane. They got a bit too experimental on that track. It's a good 3 minute song though. The ten minutes of noise can make you hate the whole record if you try to sit through it. Unless you can somehow get lost in it.

So a few thoughts that I hadn't realized before after listening to YHF again this afternoon...

- the guitar in "I'm the Man Who Loves You" is very much Neil Young's style...so much so that they almost should have credited him in the liner notes.

- Ben Gibbard and Death Cab for Cutie REALLY ripped off the piano part of "Heavy Metal Drummer" for their song "I Will Possess Your Heart"

- and lastly, yeah the album made me happy. put me in a good mood. good stuff.

Will buy this album for sure. I think Sky Blue Sky is the only album of theirs that I haven't physically bought, come to think of it.

The duet with Feist is beautiful. "you never know" will have the crowd singing along to "I don't care anymore". Much better than the first listen I had with sky blue sky.

First of my reviews to come.

This album seems to be a combination farewell/love letter to America. The entire album is imbued with patriotism and idyllic settings, but many of the lyrics are politically tinged and an inditement of the current youth generation. I think the deeper message behind this album could get lost behind how damn feel good the music is.

Bull Black Nova has some intense grooves and a great piano opener. Piano seems to take a front seat in many of these songs, and it works well. Also, the "sonic experimentation" comes through on this song loud and clear, more so than what I thought was the generally straightforward rest of the album.

You and I is a beautiful lovers lament, and Feists voice goes perfectly with Tweedys

You Never Kow is fantastic, favorite song on first listen. It seems like a perfect song for a road-trip montage, as well as being a passable protest song. Nice wah-wah guitar and sunny harmonies and continuing the great piano work. Sounds great.

Nels is absolutely shredding. Just shredding. But he never overtakes the songs. Nice pedal-steel on Deeper Down.

Country Disappeared and I'll Fight both have great war/apocalyptic imagery. I loved the reference to "crushed cities" and the nightly news in Disappeared, and the army imagery in I'll Fight first made me think that America is the lover he references throughout the album. "I'll kill for you, I'll die for you." Nice subtle organ flourishes as well

Sunny Feeling is more jabs at American youth (a generalization, I know) and has some cool bass vs, guitar battle licks.

Cool crescendos in “Everlasting,” and I think it's a great closer. This entire song has a sense of foreboding. The ending is fantastic. There is a glimmer of organ, and then you think a final guitar solo is coming, until you hear the sweet strains of woodwinds, giving way once again to soft, high guitars. It’s like tasting a recipe you don’t know the ingredients of, each part dancing in your mind and tantalizing for only a second before it gives way to something else.

I would call Wilco the song maybe the weakest on the album but it's a fun song. I can't believe you caught all that on first listen and were able to transcribe it. Did you take notes?

No. I can't really enjoy it if I take notes. Maybe on later listens, as there will be plenty more.

I should be saving my money for NIN and Bonnaroo, but I really want to go to Stinkweed and get their special edition Yankee Hotel Foxtrot now and start building my Wilco vinyl collection.

My own project of listening to an album a day has helped my attention to detail immeasurably.
