Sounds fuckin sweet

Over the next month, Beck will be overhauling his website, and one of the features will be something called Record Club, in which Beck ropes in various musician friends to record an entire album in a day. For the purposes of scrappy immediacy, nobody will rehearse or arrange anything beforehand.

After that day of furious recording, Beck will slowly let the record out into the world via his website (as well as the websites of the other musicians involved), uploading a new song once a week. He'll kick this party off with The Velvet Underground and Nico. That's an ambitious start! Will Beck attempt the Nico vocal parts himself? We'll find out!

Future Record Clubs will involve friends-of-Beck like Devendra Banhart, MGMT, Jamie Lidell, and producer Nigel Godrich

MGMT late night set must have been insane. Have they gotten better live? They were disappointing at Coachella last year.

I HATED their Coachella set with every fiber of my being. From where they were then to what they've become now, the change is staggering. They have transformed into an amazing rock and roll band. There were points where they delved deep into intense psychedelic rock and man they fucking ROCKED. The old songs were reworked and new life has been brought into them and they sounded wonderful. The tent overflowed and went way past all the way into the vendors, the entire crowd was SO into it and the glowsticks in the air never stopped. I have no regrest about leaving NIN early, It was the 3rd best set of the weekend behind BBoys and YYYs

Wow, happy to hear MGMT's gotten better live. Although I thought they were fine when they opened for Beck at the Hollywood Bowl last year. Fine except for when they closed with Kids and the band left with just Andrew and Ben singing along to a backing track. THAT was fucking lame.

Whiskey Sour

2 oz blended whiskey
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 tsp powdered sugar
1 cherry

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

I have found Beck more and more less interesting the last three albums. Maybe my taste is changing but I love everything the guy has done from Mellow Gold through Sea Change. The last three sound so uninspired to me. I still enjoy all the older albums at least.

His last performance at Nokia made me a lifetime fan (though his shenanigans with the echoplex gigs made me want to pee on Ron L Hubbard's grave).

Ha, different tastes I guess. I've been seeing him since 94' and my favorite tour was the Midnight Vultures tour. IMO his stage presence was far more spontaneous and there was crazy amounts of energy and fun at those shows. Maybe I need to spend a bit more time with the newer albums. I saw him a couple of times on the guero tour and got tired of the "stomp" routine at the table and the marionettes. I took a break after that. As far as albums go my favorites are mellow gold, mutations and sea change. "debra" being the best song to see live and not inserted in a short medley.

THIS.

Also, collaborative album with Charlotte Gainsbourg on the way Beck Covers Sonic Youth's EVOL on Cassette for Sonic Youth Box Set

Earlier this year, Beck and Sonic Youth released a split 7" for Record Store Day. SY covered Beck's "Beercan" "Pay No Mind" and Beck had his way with Sonic Youth's "Green Light". It turns out this isn't going to be the last Sonic Youth cover we'll hear from Beck.

In a recent Pitchfork interview, Beck revealed that the "Green Light" cover will appear on a forthcoming and mysterious Sonic Youth box set, which will include Beck covering SY's entire classic 1986 album EVOL. On cassette. Yes, cassette.

Beck's been making a habit of covering entire albums lately. As part of his Record Club project, he's currently in the process of releasing his version of The Velvet Underground and Nico on his website, one song at a time. He wouldn't let slip any of the other albums he'd covered, but he did say that he and MGMT came pretty close to doing Ace of Base's Happy Nation, which would've been incredible.

Here's what Beck had to say about that Sonic Youth box: "They are doing some kind of box where they are getting artists to do photographs and art and pamphlets related to Sonic Youth, and one of the things they were requesting was a cassette. So I signed up for the cassette. I thought it would be an interesting idea, at least, something that's on cassette." The Sonic Youth box has yet to be confirmed.

Beck also mentioned that he'd recorded an entire collaborative album with the French singer/actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, though he didn't know when that album would come out. Beck said, "We started it about last spring, last year, and we've been working on it off and on. We finished that a couple months ago." Beck is busy!

Look out for the full interview, coming soon to Pitchfork.
