Thread: Let's talk about Beck, man

I agree with Chris. I love Morning Phase - it's upbeat and it moves along nicely - I always thought Sea Change was boring and plodding.
Arcade Fire - Sir Richard Bishop, Bill Orcutt - Spoon - Paul McCartney - Steve Gunn - Beserktown Fest - Slint - Sleep - Swans - Owen Pallett - Neutral Milk Hotel - Chris Thile & Edgar Meyer - Bobby Bradford Quartet - Matana Roberts - Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Braxton - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Songs for Unseen Warhol Films - Ben Frost, Tim Hecker, Pete Swanson - Ryoji Ikeda - Slowdive - A Winged Victory for the Sullen - John Zorn Marathon

You're boring and plodding. When Beck creates a masterpiece you fucking recognize that masterpiece. There is nothing boring about the arrangements on Sea Change. Do you understand? Good. heh

Thankfully I don't. Let's keep it to how good the new album is, right?

I said it last night and I'll say it again: Sea Change is far from plodding. I mean, sure, it's slow, but it's not a laborious trudge of a record.

The real question here is why does Tall Chris have Mellow Gold so low on his list? Maybe give it another chance/listen?

I found large moments of it either boring or uninspired. Guero worked as a retread of the Odelay sound because there were strong songs behind the noise, but some of the stuff on The Information was eminently forgettable. One man's opinion, anyway.

We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

I mostly agree with this, buy you're forgetting one thing: The Information came with stickers.

You could be right, I haven't listened to it in years! Definitely needs a relisten.

I decided to revisit The Information. I decided it might be better than Guero. It starts out solid but I did get bored halfway into it.

For me it's definitely Mellow Gold, Sea Change, Midnight Vultures and Odelay in the top four and you can arrange them any way you like. I can even see Mutations in there. The rest I am not as passionate about. I do think Morning Phase is the best album since Sea Change.

There are very few songs on this planet as good as "The Golden Age".

Really digging Morning Phase. The guitar work is especially strong throughout. Beck's voice is outstanding as well. I especially love the 2nd half of the album. Do you think he'll break out an orchestra at Coachella? Saw the Hollywood Bowl show years ago with strings and it was amazing.

In fantasy land I want Beck playing Midnight Vultures from start to finish in the Sahara. The next best thing for me would be an orchestral performance on the Outdoor Theater at sunset.

A very good interview with Beck about music, the new album, reuiniting with everyone from the Sea Change sessions to make Morning Phase. I didn't realize he stopped playing guitar for like eight years because of that back injury either.

Amen to that. Think I've probably played that song more than any other in my iTunes collection.

I love Geuro. It might have been my favorite album that year and I still find most of the tracks incredibly enjoyable. It might be light fare compared to some of his more personal work, but I think that album gets a bit of the shaft when discussing discographies. It's fucking solid.

Midnight Vultures is also #1 for me. I figured I'd be the only one with that up top.

it's my favorite as well. easily. I think my order would be:

    Midnite Vultures
    Odelay
    Mutations
    Modern Guilt
    Mellow Gold
    Guero
    Sea Change
    The Information
    Morning Phase
    One Foot In The Grave
    Stereopathetic Soulmanure

3-6 are interchangeable, and I still need more time with Morning Phase to properly place it.
