"The organizers of Record Store Day have been happily overwhelmed by a steady
flurry of support and activity from artists, record labels and retailers
wishing to participate in the annual event in salutation of the independent
music store. This year Record Store Day is set to feature a number of
exciting new products made especially for the event from such well-known
artists as Radiohead, Wilco, Tom Waits and Lucinda Williams and the Flight
of the Conchords, just to name a few.

Wilco plan to release their upcoming DVD as an exclusive release to indie
stores and on the band's website on Record Store Day. The group's Jeff
Tweedy told Billboard Magazine in a recent interview, "Even if I wasn't in a
band, I'd still support Record Store Day. It's a great thing and I'm glad we
could do something special with them for our DVD."

The Decemberists will release a Record Store Day 7" as well. The band's
Colin Meloy adds, "I don't know what I would do without indie record stores.
Growing up in a town without them, I can tell you that it's no fun to shop
for indie records at chain box stores."

You can also expect a slew of vinyl releases from Radiohead, My Morning
Jacket who will release a CD as well as limited run double 10" vinyl
recorded live in Louisville at record store Ear X-tacy.

Also expected are classic split 7" releases from Tom Waits and Lucinda
Williams who will issue a double 7" of live tracks from Atlanta and
Edinburgh, as well as Sonic Youth exclusive Record Store Day split singles
    with Beck and Jay Reatard.

Other indie rock elder statesmen the Jesus Lizard will release a special
package to include nine 7" singles and Guided By Voices will re-release
their Hold On Hope LP, with three bonus tracks.

And in the "legends" category, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen
will all release RSD exclusive 7" singles. Def Jam also plans to release a 4
LP gatefold history of the label, the physical version of which will be for
    indies only.

Fans can expect more unique Record Store Day pieces from a diverse array of
artists such as Metric, Slipknot, Jane's Addiction, The Smiths, the Stooges,
MC5, Modest Mouse, Slayer, Rivers Cuomo, the Black Kids, Brandi Carlile,
Taking Back Sunday, among many others.

In addition, Coachella, the world-renowned annual music festival set to take
place on April 17-19 in Indio, California, has chosen Record Store Day to
run the event's popular on-site record store, with management provided by
popular Southwest-based indie retailer, Zia Record Exchange. The on-site
Coachella store, previously operated by Virgin, is noted for its high
profile foot traffic and good vibe.

Record Store Day, April 18, 2009, coincidentally falls smack in the middle
of the dazzling desert-set festival. Promoted by GoldenVoice, Coachella 2009
boasts such an eclectic mix of big name headliners as Paul McCartney, Amy
Winehouse, My Bloody Valentine, Public Enemy, TV On The Radio, The Cure, The
Hold Steady, Leonard Cohen, Morrissey, Jenny Lewis, Franz Ferdinand as well
as many others sure to be stopping by the Record Store Day site to peruse
the shelves for records and memorabilia and hang with their fans between
    sets.

A number of artists performing at this year's Coachella will release product
expressly for Record Store Day. Among them, Mastodon who will release "Crack
The Skye" on 180 gram vinyl to include an extra 7" single and lyric sheet,
Jenny Lewis will issue a split 7" with none other than Elvis Costello, and
Black Keys will release a special RSD split 7" with the Flaming Lips."

Pf, where do you suggest we keep vinyl during the show? Won't lockers melt that shit? Will the store hold our purchases?

Also, there is more discussion about this in the Record Collection thread

Ya I wasnt sure where to stick this to make sure people saw it. I don't know about your vinyl question. You would think a record store would think about that before planning to sell it at a festival in the desert. Maybe there is contact info on the website you can try to contact them to ask?

Well, records should be fine as long as you are careful with them and are NOT camping. If you are camping, you're fucked. My Portishead single and signed St. Vincent record got horribly warped.

Was this ever a question? It's like comparing Amoeba to Sam Goody. I am a little surprised though...I didn't know they had stores in CA.

BTW, Zia did the store at Vegoose.

This is awesome. I can't wait to check out what's in stock. I have to admit, when I first came across the record store day website (c/o the Swell Seasons' myspace blog), I was bummed that it took place during Coachella cause it seemed like such a good idea. But sure enough, Coachella was already on top of their shit and was listed as one of the retailers for the event. Awesome.

    Zia rules. But...

They consistently piss me off when they don't have new releases the day they come out. I am fiercely loyal to them anyway, as they are one of the last bastions for real, diverse media.(at least in Tucson)

Zia rocks. I got Siouxsie and the Banshees Through the Looking Glass, PJ Harvey Rid of Me, Velvet Underground VU, and Oingo Boingo Skeletons in the Closet: The Best of Oingo Boingo over the weekend, none of them previously used, for $20.

    more news from Zia:
i should have specific details on the holds and shipping in a few days. we will hold items until the end of the day for free, but we may be charging for the whole weekend. it is safe to send vinyl. we do it everyday, but it's expensive to do it right. to send 1 record it will cost $12.00. but it's not so bad if you are sending 5-10 records. 10 records will only cost you $20.00. we will be offering insurance.
this is what i know of.
ALL OF THIS MAY CHANGE, MANY ITEMS HAVE ALREADY BEEN PUSHED AND MY QUANTITIES WILL BE LIMITED.

sorry i really wanted to make that clear. i will also have a bunch vinyl for the coachella artist and even some used vinyl too.

    i hope this help

    steve @ zia

Akron/Family - Everyone is Guilty 7" (Dead Oceans)

"Everyone is Guilty" is the first single from Akron/Family's upcoming May 5th full-length release, Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free. Featuring album opener "Everyone is Guilty" along with non-album b-side "Total Destruction". Opening with a groove unlike anything Akron/Family have ever laid to tape, this single kicks off a new chapter for the band. The percussive thunder and anthemic electric guitars make a bold statement, touching on everything from Fela Kuti to Sly and the Family Stone in under six psychedelic minutes. This is the original single for "Mountain Song," the rarest non-limited edition single ever released by Jane's Addiction. Packaged in original replica picture sleeve.
Jesus Lizard - Inch 7" Box (Touch & Go)

INCH is a collection of all the 7" singles The Jesus Lizard released on Touch and Go, lovingly remastered by Bob Weston and enclosed in a foldable clear plastic package, suitable for both compact storage and bedroom wall display. Adding to the allure is the fact that each 7" has been out of print for over six years, so finding any one single (let alone all of them) at a store has been near impossible. Also included here is a 7" of "Puss", the Jesus Lizard's side from the long-gone split with Nirvana. Still not enough? INCH also contains the "Gladiator" single, originally given away exclusively at a Jesus Lizard Brixton Academy show in London back in 1992 and nowhere else.
Jenny Lewis & Elvis Costello - Carpetbaggers 7" (Rhino)

Never before available in the U.S., this exclusive limited edition 7" pressing created specially for Record Store day includes two songs featuring Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis and Elvis Costello. Lykki Li / El Perro del Mar split 7" (Rhino)

Exclusive limited edition pressing created specially for Record Store day, featuring two unreleased cover songs from Swedish indiepop sensations Lykke Li & El Perro Del Mar. Features cover of Wendy Rene's "After Laughter (Comes Tears)" by Lykke Li, and a cover of Aaliyah's version of the Isley Brothers' "At Your Best (You Are Love)" by El Perro Del Mar.
Magnolia Electric Co - It's Made Me Cry 7" (Secretly Canadian)

It's been 6 years since Jason Molina has bestowed a 7-inch on us and it was well worth the wait. The first 3 songs of the first 7-inch under the Magnolia Electric Co moniker are comprised of compositions conceived, written, recorded and mixed by Jason and company over a series of 5 days in Bloomington by Mike Bridavsky at Russian Recording as they geared up for tour in October '08. The fourth track was recorded at the same studio about a year prior featuring the late great Evan Farrell, a Protection Spell for his new journey. Proceeds go towards Evan Farrell's family.

Misfits - Walk Among Us LP (Rhino)

Walk Among Us, The Misfits legendary debut album, isn't so much a musical milestone as it is an american music culture milestone. A mixture of 50's sci fi and horror imagery, Elvis, rockabilly and somehow more over the top then most punk rock groups of the day and still fun, funny, creepy and brilliant. A wonderfully crude 13 songs churned out in just 25 minutes and 25 years later still a classic. Pressed on 140 gram vinyl.
Modest Mouse - Satellite Skin / Guilty Cockerspaniels 7" (Sony)

Modest Mouse will be releasing four 7-inch singles, 2 songs on each single, all leading up to the 8-song EP No One's First and You're Next in early August. The first 7" will be on orange vinyl, is housed in a three-panel embossed sleeve and arrives just in time for Record Store Day.

Slayer - Psychopathy Red 7" (Sony)

The first new music since 2006's ferocious Christ Illusion, "Psychopathy Red" is a blast of proper thrash metal by the band that invented it. The track is inspired by the truly heinous Russian serial murderer, Andrei Chikatilo, and if this is any indication of where Slayer's heading with their new album (Summer 2009) then, once again, no one is safe.

Talking Heads - 77 LP [reissue] (Rhino)

The debut album from New York-based Talking Heads is a slice of brilliant schizophrenic pop. The urgency of the music heralds in the beginnings of the new wave era, showing a band at the forefront of a movement, unwilling to conform while making a statement with their sound. Remastered at Acoustech Mastering. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

That's great that the limited stuff will be there Friday as well, so I know what I'm doing when I get inside. But I didn't see any mention of the MMJ vinyl on that list.
