Although I think the one song I actually sort of like is his biggest hit.
NIN has mastered the live show. Anyone can literally walk into a NIN show and leave amazed by the experience. That is whether you are a fan or are not a fan of their music. I would say the same for Tool. Not only are their shows innovative and unique visually, but the music comes off incredibly well live. They have taking their shows to the next level. They are on Roger Water's level and their shows are truely life changing.

I'd agree with that for NIN, but absolutely would disagree for Tool. Trent is a showman, whereas the Tool guys hide in the darkness and let their lights do the talking. When I saw Tool it felt like listening to their recordings on a really good sound system with a great light show, not a live set.

Yes, i agree about Tool. I get that the diehards love their live shows to death, but you are not going to bring a lukewarm fan into a Tool show and find them loving it. i used to be a really huge Tool fan when i saw them and have never had the desire to go out of my way to see them again.

But yes, NIN are insane live. I am a total Trent Reznor dork though and unabashedly love everything he does.

Well, Tool are better on album than NIN. Ænima is flawless. I feel like you must have gotten a bunk show. The drummer is increadible live. Lateralus and Third Eye are arguably two of the greatest songs ever played live.

I'm not sure why the video isn't synced to the vocals but because I've watch this video about a thousand times.

I saw them during the Lateralus tour. Danny Carey is an incredible live drummer. Like Bryan said though, it SOUND amazing. I'll happily listen to Tool bootlegs. They not compelling to watch. An yes, Ænima is fantastic, used to be one of my favorite albums. I still love listening to it.

Not arguing with most of your points, except that Tool are not the type of band to win over naysayers live, because they don't put the effort into their shows. Musically they are technically flawless and they change up and do great things with thier song, but they have no movement, no performance energy, and a singer in a heavy band has no business hiding in the back of the stage barely visible.

EDIT: REGARDING THAT VIDEO POST: dude, most of us did not get to see Tool 20 years ago. they are a much, much, much different live band now, and have been for the past 10+ years

Okay, but on this last tour they opened with a 15 minute (at least) version of the song "Third Eye", which was absolutely amazing. That song, without a doubt, shook the living shit out of everyone in attendance. The simple black shadows against the video wall, contrast beautifully amongst the chaotic visuals. And Drinkey, how can you even argue about their live shows if you, admittedly, haven't seen them in over a decade?

Pics are evidance of Maynard's showmanship.

that show 10 years ago didn't convince me to want to spent $60-100 to see them again.

Maynard is great as the front man for A Perfect Circle, i've seen them several times.

Who knew the singer from Passion Pit had such issues? A surprisingly interesting piece.

Over dinner one night, he casually notes that his vocal range spans four octaves.
Um, not so much. His voice is like nails on a chalkboard live.

Sounds like the guy has a solid woman in his corner. Hope he doesn't fuck that up.

So, BNM for Passion Pit. Should we expect similar praise for whomever p4k decides to do feature articles on?

You coulda expected it from this feature at least. The author gave high praise to the new album whenever he mentioned it.

They write feature articles on bands they like. It's not some weird conspiracy.

I'm not really sure when Pitchfork turned into the underground music Illuminati. Next thing you know, they'll be reviewing albums created by their own writers . . . . oh fuck!

C'mon guys, I'm not trying to be conspiratorial. Hell, they had an interview bit on Air right before they put up a damning indictment of Voyage Dans La Lune, so there are exceptions. It's more that the new feature article thing jumps at you every single time you visit the site (or at least the Passion Pit piece did for like a week) so it's even harder to ignore what they're throwing at you. Also, pretty sure the feature article and the review were written by two different guys, but I could be wrong (Yeah, I know I know, "OH SO TWO WRITERS LIKED THE ALBUM!? THERE MUST BE SOMETHING SECRET GOING ON" etc. etc.).

The editors vote on whether or not to give something BNM, so the more people on the site giving it praise, the more likely it'll be BNM.

Right, this is more about whether it'll be more easy to predict which records are going to get positively reviewed (since the pop-up feature article thing is new)than "how do they pick which records get a BNM and is there an agenda to that choice?".

Starting to look like Rolling Stone's 4 star ratings.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.
