I mean... I don't think Paul's Tomb is even close to as good as Tears... but it's still an incredible album and the last thing it should be compared to is Sunset Rubdown.

While waiting for Caribou to set up his stage yesterday, two guys next to me were discussing somewhat loudly how influential Pitchfork has been for up and coming bands, and how they've been trying to get their album on Pitchfork's radar by posting their music to blogs. I joined in and commented on how Kevin Drew of BSS commented on Pitchfork's contribution to their success and was met with evil hipster death stares. I then had to listen to one of them blather on about his band's "on-the-fringe, not-popularly-known" music influences: Surfer Blood, Avi Buffalo, Real Estate.

In my opinion, you let them off the hook. However, I understand since you have to appeal to your core constituency.

sounds like it. the news came from the moderator of their message board, so it's semi-legit/grain of salt.

At least it sounds promising that it will come out in 2011.

i guess there's enough on here to not start a new thread. i just think they are uppity reviewers and pretty negative. and that makes them the best, right?

No, and they are not the best. What makes them good is usually the writers seem to generally care about the music they're writing about, and when they find something they like, they are pretty passionate about it. And, when the whole staff agrees on something enough to give a best new music (or however that happens), it's generally very good music. Pitchfork is a resource and talking about how much you dislike it is old and pointless.

I don't really think you've added anything to what i already know. That aside, i can't tell if the dissing is tongue-in-cheek (a la edward sharpe who earned a whopping 4.1) and you can tell they care enough about music to be paid to be really snobby and gawkeresque wannabes at times. When they are positive, they are very well received. Their most popular read review is a very positive, lovely and caringly written evaluation. And it's rediculous, when Sharpe's release is way more emotionally deep than Aeroplane's new single 'we can't fly', and i'm not comparing them. Just some of their reviews deserve a re-write because of all the scorn and rediculousness.

Maybe someone else can explain, thanks anyways bmack86 (don't know your name sir, and dont really care to!!)

Wouldn't you rather see someone who dislikes a piece of music express that distaste rather than write a vague, pointlessly praising review that doesn't really go into why they like the album?

Your response doesn't really make sense though. What is their most popular read review? Why is Edward Sharpe your focus there? Many people find Edward Sharpe to be a bit cloying and obvious with their music (although I disagree and enjoy quite a bit of their stuff, I can definitely see where people are coming from when they say that.) I disagreed with the Pitchfork review of Edward Sharpe, but at the same time I can definitely understand and hear the main point their making in the review, which is that they take a stiff, heavy-handed approach to 60s revivalism throughout the album, and that on Home they successfully transcend that issue.

Or maybe I'm missing your point in the back and forth of your post.

    speaking of back and forth...

I am just saying him/them as an example. Don't make me dig up more saddening reviews. Placing numbers next to music makes no sense to me. Comparing E. Sharpe to fruitopia is just cruel, man. But whatever, they're just an opinion factory, and we're all entitled to ours. It's their clout and ranking system and wording ugh all of that it rubs me wrong, like away from music, and away from them. That's all.

Edward Sharpe got a poor review because they make shit music. That's understandable. But their accompanying rating seemed extra low to me because of how much mileage the album had got for itself among the Pitchfork-reading audience since it was released. As if to rub it in everyone's face how truly vapid it was. Had they been a more under the radar artist, I do feel like that review could have been less cold.

I don't understand their role. Are they tastemakers or yuckity-yuck snobs. Only time will tell if their review (yes Sharpe's) is flimsier than the piece of hard work they peed on. It's always fun to tear things apart, but I don't appreciate unfairness. That's all. /me

It's also fun to be purposefully vapid, and equally deserve a high ranking.

Shit music? When does your next album come out?

I don't care to go to P4k for reviews, i know what I hear, i don't need it to be talked down to. Just the fact's please bitch please.

There is no denying that they have been taste makers. Many of their lesser writers are also what might be referred to as "yuckity-yuck snobs." There is also no shortage of petulant individuals that feel the constant need to bicker redundantly about something that is obvious on the face of things. When someone calls you out on the bad taste you have... It can be either a rough realization or tantrum riddled with denial.

I couldn't tell you what their role is. But I can tell you that nobody is going to remember Edward Sharpe ten years from now.

This band would not consider their music vapid if asked.

Curious about Altered Zones. The blogs they cited are shit. They are also labels... Which makes me think this will just end up being a pandering to bands/friends of those labels. Still could be interesting though...

And the DP/Bjork collab got a 7.7, should have been a bit higher imo.

the new M.I.A. release got appropriately panned. i know there are some folks who are digging this, but i actually wholeheartedly agree with this review (less all the "i got your back fellow music critic" editorializing about Maya herself....i really couldn't give a shit about her personally). it's pretty awful.

she's been on a downward trajectory since blowing her Coachella set a couple years ago. if she were to fade into the sunset, it would be no huge loss to me. i'm tired of her gun samples and hollow political proclamations.

The Pitchfork review of M.I.A.'s new one is just retarded. I can't even believe I read it. I'm using the word retarded.

You want to think M.I.A. is a pop artist now? For one fucking song she's released three years ago? Do you remember why everyone liked her first two albums to begin with? M.I.A. makes club bangers. She's got three great albums worth of them now, and she's made one of the best of the year. She don't write no fucking pop songs. She is not a pop musician.

She makes pop songs. Maybe slightly complex, occasionally abrasive pop songs, but pop songs nonetheless.
