I didn't bother listening to the full album because this is mostly how I felt about the lead single that's been all over sirius xm.

That lead single is, without changing more than maybe one half of one note, "Taxman" by the Beatles. As much as I harp on bands for being "derivative", as long as you're adding something of your own to the pool I'm normally ok. But this is so damn blatant that I really can't even bring myself to listen to the album. Not to mention that they made THE most generic '60s album cover, completely aping The Who's Who's Next.

    10/01 - King Crimson - Orpheum
    10/10 - Thurston Moore/Sebadoh - Echoplex (?)
    10/11 - BADBADNOTGOOD - Echoplex (?)
    10/12 - IAMX - Complex
10/13 - Oren Ambarchi - Jewels Catch One

Man, Who's Next is actually an album that an ambitious young band would be smart to completely rip off. I would love to hear that.

Yeah, pretty much this exactly. Nothing about it was bad, per se, but song after song, as soon as it was finished I immediately forgot what it sounded like. I tried going back to it a second time after an unremarkable first listen, and found nothing there either. If anything, hopefully these reviews (because the majority of the reviews I have read on the album share this opinion) will push the band to experiment more and focus less on meticulously recreation, and more on genuine creativity. They have the potential, but this album just doesn't do it.

EDIT: Also, I agree with Mitch. More bands need to shamelessly jock The Who.

It was obvious she'd get BNM and deservedly so. This album is great. God damn, that voice!

So even though I disagree with the score, I agree with most of what the reviewer says on this one. I think the handful of stand out tracks are what make this album enjoyable, and apparently none of them were produced by Carney.

I gave the album a listen today and turned it off after 3-4 songs. I didn't hate it or anything... just eh. Won't be bad background music while we're drinking beer and bullshitting at Psych Fest, though.

Hah, I feel the exact same way as well... Tracks 1-4 are some of the best songs they've ever done! After that, things are very hit or miss. Whatever, I love these dudes so much, I'll probably come around to the album as a whole and listen to it more than anything else this year.

Pitchfork's review of Mess is just straight up dumb.

Throughout the review it seems like the reviewer genuinely enjoys most of the songs on the album and gives them props for moving forward with their experimentation with electronic music. Then he sums up the review by saying that Liars have traditionally been labeled an "unlistenable" band, which has made them an "easy band to admire" and concludes this album is a "centrist" album for Liars and that people will like this record simply because it is a Liars record. I can't… I don't even… Sometimes Pitchfork is just the worst.

Seven albums in, the respectable qualities of Liars’ music have been well-documented, but it’s worth asking: do they make moving, ingratiating music or simply admirable art? Does anything on Mess have the capacity to inspire emotional investment? Does any of it stick with you? Or, more importantly, where is the Liars-ness in Mess?

Pitchfork nailed the Mac Demarco album today. Excellent review by any standards and they tackle his appeal/ aesthetic quite well.

    8.5 and BNM. Well deserved.

Really odd to see a band (Plague Vendor) who's members I see working or hanging out around Uptown Whittier get reviewed by Pitchfork. With a decent score from Cohen no less.

Ian Cohen's Review of Coachella 2014

The festival admirably presents music-as-art to people who simply do not give a shit about music as art, and the tension can be fascinating.

Looks like they felt bad about giving the new album a 2.5, so they reviewed the Pixies entire back catalog, too. Very strange.
