That isn't the only reason, my father use to live there and my son has always wanted to go, the girl is just an extra bonus. He can't back out now, the flight cost $500 and is non-refundable. I just want to know if anyone has stayed in a hostel and what the experience was like.

Stayed in hostels all over Europe and it was great, would always be people to go out with and give you tips for the area. Really the best way to meet others your age who are travelling, especially when doing so alone. Not sure what a hostel in Alaska would be like, though. Gotta keep an eye on any valuables. Heard about a lot of theft since many times you are sharing rooms with complete strangers.

Thanks Steve, that is my biggest worry, but I would worry about that in a hotel too. It's close to the airport so I like that. I am waiting for him to check it out and see what he thinks, but the feedback is appreciated.

Is he going to just stay in Anchorage? That would be a shame. Alaska is wonderful but Anchorage is sort of like a northern Tulsa. Not much to the city itself.

Everything in Alaska is expensive as hell. Room, food, gas, beer, everything. Be prepared.

LOL, thanks Amy, Condoms - CHECK!

I have actually been to Anchorage once myself, I am hoping she is planning on taking him exploring, it is a beautifule place. That is why I am leaning more towards the hostel so he has money for other things. It's just a little scary. I wish I knew some of my dads old friends up there, then I would be more comfortable with this plan.

That's crazy scenicworld, two people from Temecula are going to New York within a couple of weeks, the fucking odds of that.
I really came here to ask folks about the discovery pass that Greyhound is offering. I've started my road trip on the day the oil refinery caught fire and I saw gas prices jump horrendously as I was driving up the 5 to SF. The Discovery Pass is obviously the cheaper alternative now seeing that it's only a little more than 400 dollars for a full month of traveling on Greyhounds and others vs close to a grand in gas for my car. For anyone who's traveled with this pass, is it pretty restrictive? Am I going to find myself cut off from parts of the country like National Parks or small towns? I don't want to be completely glued to big cities in my travels so with this pass does that mean I'll have to hitch hike a lot or get local bus fare on regular basis? How's riding on the bus itself?

No amount of savings is worth riding Greyhound.

I would rather hitchhike with the 75% chance that I would be gang raped before I took greyhound.

I meant myself and you but now that I think about it I know someone else who just moved there a week ago, she lives in Brooklyn now I think, also from Temecula. It's weird just to see someone else from Temecula on here besides Devon.
I rode a Greyhound for three hours and it wasn't too bad, I want your horror stories dammit. I love the freedom to drive but still it's a lot of fucking money I can save. Is ride share pretty safe by the way? I was thinking about picking people up through that, any stories with that?

oh crazy, what a small world! I had no idea there were other Temecula people on the board besides a few that rarely post. There's a car around the corner from me with a coachella bumper sticker on it but the only 2 times that I've seen the owner outside I've been too afraid to say anything, haha. you or Devon don't live in Starlight Ridge, do you?

I couldn't imagine living in temecula and relying on public transportation unless I was limiting myself to the Temecula/Murrieta area. I've looked into busing it down to the train/sprinters in Escondido so I can take the train to work, but it's a minimum of 3 hours from door to door so it just hasn't been practical. I don't have any experience with the ride share programs personally, but those are usually arranged through your employer. if you arrange a carpool with someone you know you are allowed to park your car there though I just don't know if there's a place to register or look for someone other than craigslist.

Agreed, European hostels were the best I have seen. Particularly Germany, they were a cut above.

I did Alaska after Coachella this year and loved it. We did the cruise through the inner passage and it was amazing. Beautiful scenery and for the most part the people were awesome.

I'm jealous of sonofhal, Amsterdam is one of the best places I have been.

I am off to Thailand for a week in a few days. Visiting Bangkok and Chang Mai. Very much looking forward to it as I haven't done much of Asia. My travel planner ( wife ) has some cool adventures lined up - I'm particularly looking forward to patting an elephant and riding a tiger... or something.

First night in Amsterdam. Head to one of my fave haunts for tapas. Hit a little bar near my hotel on the way back. Chat to a guy who keeps buying me beers, meet a fellow Everton supporter, Guy buying me drinks hears I'm here to see Sigur Ros. Puts Sigur Ros on the jukebox. Tells everyone to be quiet, as I've come a long way to see this band (It's a 35 minute flight). Turns out he owns the bar. Get drunk - spend nothing. Some other random buys a round of Jager shots for the whole bar (there is easily over 100 people here). Hello Amsterdam.
