Thread: True Detective

  1. #1

    Default True Detective

Is anyone else bananas about this show after just two episodes? It's the best thing I've seen in years, from T Bone doing the music to Alexandra Daddario. I hope it stays the course and remains excellent throughout.

Here's a good read about the show and the rotating format.

Matthew McConaughey is fantastic in this. Woody Harrelson is nicely restrained. And the plot is a really nice slow burn.

The creator also wrote a couple "The Killing" scripts. I haven't seen that show; is it similar to this one?

Actually, I'm gonna agree with this thread's creation. There is no doubt in my mind this show is going to end up being amazing, even if it only lasts eight episodes. I was doubtful something could make me like Matthew Mcconaughey but goddamn if he isn't great in this--although his fake smoking annoys the shit out of me. Him and Woody are delivering A class performances and I love the fact that it's going to be a season written entirely by one writer and directed entirely by one director.

I have always been a secret McConaughey fan so I am really excited for him to show off some actual talent, like he did in Dallas Buyers Club. I'm loving the show so far. I enjoy how Woody's mindset is so typical for a person living in a town like that. The dynamic is great. Woody thinking Matthew is odd for not having a family, and saying these off the wall things, that actually make sense, while in the mean time he is having an affair with a young coworker. I also enjoy the commentary after the show. Looking forward to more episodes.

And a thread about diapers at a festival is just fine. This show is at bare minimum off to a great start and is more deserving of a thread than most others topics that have their own threads.

I've never been huge into McConaughey either but with Mud, Dallas Buyers Club and now this he's really having a career resurgence.

This show is amazing. I watched the episodes back to back (obviously) and had no regret sleeping only 4 hours for a work night. It almost pains me when the plot doesn't resolve in a normal 2-3 hour time like a movie, because it definitely feels like it when you see McConaughey and Woody working together.

Here is a list of songs featured on the show in the first half of the season with a link to a good article at the end. T Bone is killing it as usual. How do you ignore folks on this board? I'm trying to get all forms of JorgeC out of my life.

    • Bo Diddley, “Bring It to Jerome”
    • Captain Beefheart, “Clear Spot”
    • Handsome Family, “Far From Any Road”
    • The Staple Singers, “Stand By Me (When the Storms of Life Are Raging)”
    • 13th Floor Elevators, “The Kingdom of Heaven (Is Within You)”
    • Black Angels, “Young Men Dead”
    • Boogie Down Productions, “Illegal Business”
    • Lucinda Williams, “Are You Alright?”
    • The Melvins, “A History of Bad Men”
    • Grinderman, “Honey Bee (Let’s Fly to Mars”)

That's quite a comparison but not out of the realm of possibility from what we've seen so far. The only problem is that this show is an anthology series so it'll be a different cast with a different story each season. Keeping this kind of quality up will be hard to maintain but supposedly with HBO involved they're aiming for A-list actors each season.

Both characters gained more depth in episode three. "Present day" McCon was better than ever in that monologue about life. I can't tell what Martin is going to do next. It's just so good. Is everybody caught up? I don't know how to do a spoiler on here.

In threads like this, if someone's not caught up and something is ruined by them venturing in here it's not really anyone's fault but theirs. I'd say feel free to discuss anything at length.
