That makes me really happy to read that, Sparks. Thrilled to finally see them, myself.

And I happen to think 4:13 Dream is really underrated, DW. How many bands are putting out relevant albums like 30 years after arriving on the scene? And fyi, as of 1980, here are just a few of the albums The Cure had not yet recorded/released:

Pornography. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. Disintegration. Wish. The Head on the Door.

the cure are more a legendary band at thsi point so ill take a 3 hr set from them anytime. they have earned it and have a very very good catalog of music....

the good thing is they are not a nostalgia band yet. they will have a diverse set and play plenty of hits so its gonna be a great way to close coachella 09!

    No, your right. It's 2009, not 1980.

& i'm really excited to see them this year.

Likewise. In fact, I'm more excited about The Cure than anybody at Bonnaroo, too.

People and other festivals place too much emphasis on bands from the 90's.

Same theme last year, Jack Johnson is a star of the 00's, Prince the 80's and Roger Waters the 60's/70's/

They're my favorite group, but I'd be quick to admit that they're totally a nostalgia-band at this point--despite their notable attempts at changing things up in a live setting. A key difference between The Cure and most other bands who've hit that status though is that they can still deliver the goods, and Robert Smith has yet to rely on becoming a 50 year old jukebox night-in, night-out, as opposed to practically any other band who can make a claim to having the same kind of longevity.

As far as relevancy, their influence is fairly relevant but not their new material. It simply has no place in the modern musical landscape, however good or shitty you determine that to be. And a band's sound doesn't determine whether they're relevant, it's the audience; and at this point, most general audiences aren't celebrating The Cure for much more than Friday I'm In Love or Just Like Heaven. That's a weird feeling, because albums like Faith are still so vital to me.

Anyway, with that said, The Cure, MBV, and Cohen were the key artists that pushed me to make the pilgrimage out to Coachella this year. I'll definitely be up front if whether or not I'm deafened by My Bloody Valentine beforehand.

Just remember that video was taken 7 years ago, and Robert Smith has packed on about a hundred pounds since then. I'd rather listen to The Cure, but if I had to choose between staring at the cube for three hours and and staring at an obese, middle-age goth rocker with teased hair, smeared lipstick and grease paint, I'll take the cube. Really.

When I saw them last year, the main visual point of their show was picking out Robert's bald spot every time he turned around. From 38 rows back.

Oh. And his impotently cute attempts at busting a move during the second encore.

So there's a great psychedelic rock show taking place at night on the main stage, featuring a pretty reasonable light show of its own... and... you're so fixated on the singer's semblance that you can't enjoy the show? So you totally base your decision on visual enjoyment?

It's still a music festival, right? Not an arts and lights fest yet?

Here's a video from 2008. They still kick a tremendous amount of ass. And I think obese is pretty extreme, btw.

I saw The Cure last year at Sasquatch, and they sounded great, and you're right, they did have lights. But I don't think Robert Smith moved once the entire time I was watching them. Other being fat and disheveled and smeared in makeup, there just wasn't much to look at. He stood in the exact same place in front of his mic stand and didn't move the whole show. I don't care about personal appearance, but I do like a bit of stage presence, even from the obese.

I'm excited to see if this is the case. I've only seen them once, back in '96...and they were absolutely fantastic. This will be my husband's first Cure show and I'd hate for it to be anything less than amazing.

I'm REALLY, really looking forward to seeing them again!

I've seen them on each of those years, and 2008 was my favorite show ever. I went into it apprehensive, due to the lack of keyboards, but three hours later, I completely forgot about it. Porl is at the top of his game.

I agree. 4:13 Dream is very good, and the songs come across even better live.
