Thread: Thanks Goldenvoice and Fonda

    Default Thanks Goldenvoice and Fonda

For the second time in 7 days you wasted my money. From Cut Copy last week to the BS lobby lines at SMD to get to the floor tonight I am really pissed. At this point even Live Nation does a better job than GV.

Anyone remember the days of 98 Posse? The good ol days...

There was a near riot in the lobby of the Fonda tonight. You had to wait 15 minutes or so to re-enter the floor if you went to the bathroom or for a smoke. Unreal

Passive, Kruetz, you smart ass dick holes obviously werent at either of those shows or you'd be just as pissed.

I didnt go to cut copy, but I was at the Fonda tonight for SMD. Shit was ridiculous. SMD went on at 10:20 or so. Me and my girl went on the rooftop at 10 for a cig.
Came back down at 10:10 and the floor doors were shut with security guarding them. So we went up top, which I didnt mind because it was so packed on the floor.

So about 15 minutes into the show i go to the bathroom down stair and i notice a line out the door and i didnt even realize what was going on. I go back upstairs and they wont let me in. I explain my story and he says tough shit. So I got downstairs to talk to another security guard which was very helpful and radio security to escort me up to the balcony, but that process took a good 15 minutes like Jeff said.

Fuck the Fonda. I'm calling them tomorrow and hopefully get a refund.
Superfan will be in front of the Fonda masturbating furiously to a photo of him taking a photo of a band. Set is from 8:05 to approximately 8:05:15. Guest list only.

Upcoming Shows: Nocturnal Wonderland Saturday, Cut Chemist/Dj Shadow - Palladium, Massive Attack SB Bowl, Festival Supreme, Coachella 2015

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. It's normally plays out well; someone who is unknown at first comes into town and plays to a group of music lovers, then they come back a second time (third, forth) and perform for everyone else.
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

Exactly. I really love the Fonda too - one of the best places in town to see a show. I hope this limiting people downstairs is just a temporary thing while they sort out their business with the Fire Marshall. As of now I have no desire to go back to the Fonda. I would rather drive to OC and see The Faint/Ladytron there then deal with never being able to go to the bathroom

You can see my late night rant in the SMD tour thread. I have already sent a message to GV requesting a refund. My friends and I caught about 15 minutes of the show before we got stuck in the lobby.

I thought there was going to be a full on riot in there at one point. People screaming at security, etc.

If they need to limit the amount of people down there just sell Floor and Balcony tickets instead of straight GA.

I was there with some ladies and they bailed out the front door as the mood got increasingly unpleasant in the lobby. Though I kinda wanted to see what would happen, I opted to stick with my girls and GTFO.

Wait... so there was a floor and a balcony... and when the floor got full they wouldn't let people in... so if you left the floor you had to go to the balcony...

    what a shame.

They wouldnt let you onto the balcony either. You had to wait in lines, 1 in 1 out style in the lobbies to enter either the balcony or the floor

I don't see how this makes GV as bad as Live Nation. This all sounds like it was The Fonda's problem. How would GV know someone would snitch to the fire-fuzz and mess everything up?

GV shouldn't be playing loose with their customers' well-being by trying to pull one over on the fire-fuzz.

It sounds like they've probably been routinely overselling these shows and now the Fire Marshall is locked in. it's a bummer, but at the same time man, I go to a concert to go to a concert, not to smoke cigarettes. Grab your spot, keep it, and you won't have to deal with that shit. Especially if you're on the floor, go up to smoke, and then expect to get back with your friends on the floor. Pushing back and forth always pisses me off. Sayin.

I hear you but if you have to pee, you gotta pee. We all know that can be difficult in GA to get back to your old spot but you should at least be able to see the rest of the show - even if from the back!

Well, after the Tindersticks show last Friday at the Fonda (amazing show, btw), I can tell you that whatever security they are hiring for these shows is pretty awful. There were a couple of unruly individuals that needed to be dealt with early on in that show. Instead security let it fester until it pretty much broke out into a brawl between them and a numpty couple that was getting drunker by the minute and was already causing problems during the opening act (Spain).

Also, when we arrived security trying to herd people where they wanted them to sit (there were chairs on the floor), by filling up each row one at a time from the front-back. I wanted to sit on the aisle close to the back but when I tried to, they blocked me initially and told me I had to go down front where they were filling the current row. Fortunately, I am a fast talker and got my aisle seat. Lame anyway.

Did I mention Tindersticks were amazing?

Totally agreed. Get all of your shit out of the way before you go to your spot. Once you have a spot, you're obviously not going to get it back after you leave, it's just the nature of shows. Just stay put and you will have a blast, it's not an amusement park.

I staked out the first couple rows early on and had a blast!

This is fucking stupid. Most of us drinkers and smokers realize we aren't going to get our spots back if we go for one of the aforementioned. However, we should be able to stick to the back and still enjoy the show, or even go the balcony. If it was just that select group of people, maybe the reaction wouldn't have been so bad at the Fonda. However, it was not. Even if you went to take a piss, you were not allowed back in without waiting in some horrendous line which was hardly moving, if at all. You're not paying to watch/hear a show from the lobby on the mediocre lobby speakers.

Like I said in the upcoming shows thread, someone needs to start funneling money back into some pockets so we don't have to suffer this shit anymore. OR DON'T OVERSELL.

    Simple.

Here's the problem with last night (which I'll repeat from another thread):

The floor was full, so people were directed up to the balcony. However, the BALCONY was full, so people were directed up to the ROOF. Of course, you can't see the stage from the roof.

After about 10:30 or so, the idea for lines was created.

I've been going to Goldenvoice shows for 20 years. This is the first time I've ever been to a Goldenvoice show where a ticket does not allow you to see the band.

It's terrible what's happened to a once reputable promoter that looked out for the fans.

Rick Van Santen would have never let shit like this happen. EVER.

I agree with most of your statement, but, having been to around 300 shows, I can definitely say that the above statement is false. Most people who go out to get drinks or smoke feel entitled to push their way back to their friends and then talk through the rest of the show. Because apparently, for them, concerts are more about hanging out with your friends and taking pictures for myspace than, you know, watching a concert.

    Rant.

If seating capacity is 863, they should sell 863 (or less) tickets. If they sell more, they need to disclose "GA SEATING INCLUDES STANDING ROOM IN LOBBY AND HALLS".

    It's fraud to do otherwise.

    Agreed.

However, this problem began before SMD even took the stage. Stage time was to be 10:15. They closed the doors to the floor before 10pm. They started telling people that no one else would be allowed in, period. The idea for the lines came later, 10-15mins after SMD took the stage.

Very poor showing here. I've seen my last show at the Fonda, and will definitely let others know that buying a ticket there does not guarantee you will see the show.
