Thread: Proper etiquette for singing out loud at Coachella?

Question Proper etiquette for singing out loud at Coachella?

Last year I got hated on a few times for singing out loud.

"Hey asshole, this isn't American f'n idol."

    and

"I paid to hear them, not you."

Is it always bad form to sing out loud? What are the rules?

if other people can hear you over the band, you're either screaming off pitch, or it's too quiet a moment.
just pick your spots and (no pun intended) play it by ear.

i love concerts where the audience sings louder than the band.

i guess it depends what a person's used to. if you're around people who go to intimate punk shows and stuff, they'll probably be singing louder than you. if you're surrounded by people who like to go to pretentious shows where everyone just stands there by themselves and looks straight forward, then they're gonna mad-dog on you for singing.

It really depends. If its something fun like Hey Jude then go for it. But dont be singing at the top of your lungs during Fleet Foxes, M Ward, Conor Oberst, etc.

Feel free to scream at the top of your lungs during MBV though

Don't sing the guitar solos...and if someone asks you nicely to quiet down, do it...

No singing unless it's a clear moment of audience participation.

take a cue from PassiveTheory's massive rock out session to kraftwerk. This is appropriate etiquette. Singing? Please see "Sweet Caroline" before Justice.

Just don't sing excessively to the point where it affects the enjoyment of others around you.

I'm sure many people absolutely destroyed Bittersweet Symphony las t year. This year during Hey Jude, everyone will be singing just because the last five minutes of the song McCartney always makes it a massive singalong. He'll probably use the line "I wanna hear the whole world singing now..."

Also, if someone nicely to please be quiet, then be courteous back and take it down a bit. If a person has enough courage to kindly ask you to stop, then your really crossing a line.

This happened to me at Sigur Ros. This group of people behind me decided to talk the whole time. I turned around and kindly asked them to be quiet, and they were offended. Its Sigur Ros for goodness sake.

Uh, I love a nice video or bootleg, and it bugs me when people sing/ talk when it's not appropriate during a band but... Good God, you fail at live music if your priority is Youtube.

Although an off-key sing along can be annoying, I'll take it over assholes who talk during an entire song/set. I never could understand that- there's a band on stage we all paid money to hear, and some people just cannot shut the fark up yacking about their job, girlfriend, ability to touch their nose with their tongue stud, etc etc. SHUT UP! No one cares!

This is worse, but the third level of hell is when not only are they talking, but they are spouting off opinions of the show and the songs as they are going on, or running a play-by-play commentary.

There was some fat dude singing really loud during Portishead last year. Luckily I was standing next to some guys that looked like gang members (and apparently big Portishead fans) and they took care of the singer.
If we're lucky something will happen. Some adversity will happen and something unexpected will happen and you'll get tired and you'll get hungry, you'll have trouble going to the bathroom, and you'll lose your car keys, and all these wonderful things will add up to some powerful experience that 10 years from now we'll say "We lived, we lived." - Wayne Coyne on Coachella

Singing is... uh... ok... I guess... unless you have a bad voice, don't know the words or are too loud.

But if you should find yourself next to me do NOT under ANY circumstances:
    • make that loud whistle sound in my ear
    • talk excessively during every song
    • loudly request a song
    • let everyone around you know that you'd rather be seeing a different band by screaming that bands name out

sing loud enough to hear yourself, but so that others can't hear you.

and if you're just gonna talk about your day at work or what you ate an hour ago, just hang towards the back and watch. don't ruin it for everyone else.

I imagine this is an extra-meaningful topic for you, being a taper and having to deal with all this crowd noise/
