Thread: Hiking!!

It's not really much of a hike, but Baldwin Hills Park next to Culver City gives you an amazing view of basically all of L.A. You can either take the trail, or the 400 ft. staircase to get to the top (or you can be a total wuss and drive up), but once you're up there, it's amazing.

Twin Falls, a 3 hour hike from our first camp site.

    Lake O'hara

    Me.

Oesa Lake, we walked around the ledge to the left of the photo, it took a little while.

    Lake McArthur, before the snow.

So as I pointed out last page, I went to Yoho National Park this weekend for 3 nights. It is a really nice park, we stayed one night at a campground which was our only choice that was near the highway, but our other two nights we are Lake O'Hara. We caught a bus in which allowed us to hike for six hours that day on a really neat trail that took us up to a gap and around the ledges. The second day we did a shorter trail during a break in the day cause it rained before the hike and it snowed when we were almost done. We saw one bear, which was on the highway, which I was slightly disappointed about cause I wanted to see a grizzly from far away. It is quite an international destination cause we met folks from Buffalo, North Idaho, Rome, Holland, Russians via California, and Czechs vis Arizona. If any of you folks come up north and are looking for a trip I'd say to book a couple nights of camping at Lake O'Hara cause it is a really great spot!

    Canadian Rockies are so beautiful!

We've only stayed/hiked in Waterton Lakes (did the Crypt Lake trail), after camping/hiking for a couple of weeks on the US/Glacier NP side. That was some years ago. Pics like that make me want to head up there NOW. Sounds like you had a great adventure.

Too bad this thread isn't in the non-coachella misc forum. Probably would get a lot more activity.

Erik was kind enough to move this to the Misc Lounge last week (thanks Erik!), so here is our Christmas Day hike to Bear Mountain in Sedona:

Five miles round trip, 1800 ft elevation gain, varied terrain/geology. Mostly unmarked trail, follow the cairns. Some steep traverses on slick rock, and a few rock scrambles up narrow slots. Full sun, no cover (except for the north-facing slopes of two small saddles), would be brutal in the heat. (We had perfect hiking weather -- clear as a bell and temps in the 50's.) Moderate/strenuous. Very fun. Views are ASTONISHING and just get better and better as you ascend. From the top, you can see, well, EVERYTHING, including the snow-capped peaks of the San Francisco mountains near Flagstaff.

That's not Bear Mtn in the background. It's a white, flat-topped peak to the north that can't be seen from the trailhead.

Roscoe the Wonder Dog. (Not ours, but so cute we had to get a pic.)

    1litro.

    About half way up.

    A bit of snow...

    ...and ice.

    The last cairn.

I am in love with Sedona. And next time we bring our bikes, too.

After walking for a little while my knee starts to feel swollen, kind of hot and gets pretty sore. I have a brace, but that doesn't extend my available time too long. I can usually deal with the pain for a long time, but that includes causing more damage. Anyone using anything to help brace a knee that they night suggest? I really love to go hiking but i can't go nearly as much as I would like because of the pain.

I plan on doing Half Dome soon, again, sort of. I went when i was 24/25 and we were totally unprepared for it. We got to the cable and about half way up, but then I stopped. I knew I could make it up, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to make it back down. The hike itself wasn't the issue, the sandwich, trail mix and single quart of water was. HAHA!! I'll definitely be more prepared next time, but I've delayed the hike because of my knee.

Oh dang, you stopped halfway up the cables? At that point you are only 50-75 yards from the top (you can't see it, but it's very close). It's tougher to do Half Dome now --- they require permits 7 days a week. That may change; they are going to implement a new long-term plan in 2012, but haven't released it yet.

I'd recommend you see a doctor about your knee. Knees are kind of important, and I assume you'd like to use yours for the rest of your life, and only a doctor can tell you what specific exercises/physical therapy you may need (or surgery) to prevent further damage. Hiking on a knee that get swollen/sore after minimal travel is not a good idea.

Unfortunately I don't have insurance, so a doctor is kind of out. But, when I did have insurance, the doctor told me to come back when it was swollen. Lol. Cause he was gonna see me immediately and all. Haha. Asshole.

I know we were super close, but I was shaking I was so hungry. Ha! We didn't bring nearly enough food and water. I am determined to make it...all the way. It was an amazing hike. Just need a doc.

Maroo, what about a free clinic for people without insurance? I agree that knees are important.

Completed the first peak of the Olomana hike. It wasn't as difficult as I expected, but certainly one of the more challenging hikes on Oahu. I wanted to venture to the other two peaks, but the sun was setting and the haze was permeating throughout. I need to attempt this again soon.

I want to go out to Death Valley for the wildflowers. HtD, do you know when the best time is? I know obviously spring and it depends on weather, but do you have any personal insight?

No, it's the first time I've been there. It's quite spectacular though, and we definitely plan on returning.

I assume they'll have some sort of wildflower hotline during the spring; most popular desert areas do. If not, check the Alexander Payne website; they have links to various wildflower sites.

edit: Whoops, Theodore Payne, not Alexander. Don't know why Alexander Payne popped into my head; he's got nothing to do with plants, hah.

Thanks. I've always found it fascinating that one of the prettiest places in California has such an ominous name. I wonder if it's like the Iceland vs. Greenland phenomenon.

No, I'm certain when they say Death, they mean death. It's huge; lots of places to die out there if you are stupid. We loved it, but personally, I don't think I'd set foot there beyond March. It was in the mid 60's during the day, and that was just nice and comfortable to hike in full sun without cover. Much warmer and it's not going to feel too good. So many of the surfaces reflect light and heat in peculiar ways.

So, I'll bet a mid March run might be perfect for wildflowers and comfort.
