    Default There Will Be Blood...

Ok this is random but I just watched There Will Be Blood again last night and realized I had almost forgotten how amazing this movie is. I love the soundtrack (thanks Johnny Greenwood!), the set design, the cinematography, the beginning/ending scenes, and of course the acting (Daniel Day Lewis...amazing).

However I find there are lots of people out there who don't feel as good about this film as I do. So I'm just curious, Coachella board members, what is your opinion on PTA's There Will Be Blood?

Yeah that's about right. I give the story a little more credit than you though. Good movie, not brilliant movie. Greenwood's score really does make the film, along with Day-Lewis' acting of course. Character studies are fun, and this movie is no exception.

So much better than Gangs of New York though.

To those who say it was overrated let us know why you think that.

And to those you haven't seen it...do yourself a favor.

that's the way I feel about Daniel Day Lewis in the movie. I love him as an actor, but I appreciate his more subtle roles, it felt a little too similar to the Bill the Butcher role for me to think it was amazing. The score was great. I feel it added so much to the film, which I feel was while very good, vastly overrated as well.

I disagree with those who thought it was overrated. I thought it was slightly underrated. I was actually pretty upset No Country won best the best film oscar.

I honestly think he film holds up real real well to repeat viewings too.

I just watched this again on Sunday. Looking back, it may actually top No Country for me personally. Great Great film.

I know what you mean, both were great films though it was just the Coen brothers' year and I think No Country was supremely executed and more accessible to the average viewer.

In a way that makes me like TWBB better because I know it is not for everyone but to me it compromises most everything I love about film. Both hold up to repeat viewings great I find, although I enjoyed No Country the most the first time I saw it and TWBB really keeps getting better in my eyes.

I'd say No country and There will be Blood were a tie last year both equally great movies, just offering differant things.

i just found my missing copy of Blood yesterday, which i haven't watched. im scared any subsequent watching will not live up to the amazement i felt at seeing the film in the theater.

    should have beaten no country.

Give it a shot, I liked it even better then more I watched it. And I know what you mean about being tired of people not recognizing greatness, but in this case it rarely bothers me. Sure I have talked to people who didn't like the movie, but everyone at least has admitted to me there are things worth appreciating in it. I like challenging movies so this just proves it to me.

TWBB is awesome because while clearly a very strong character study it is actually much more than that. It contains very deep and strong commentary about the luring and corruptive power of both greed AND religion. The movie paints deep parallels between these two despite their respective claims that they are far removed from each other. The character of Eli is extremely important to the story (props to Paul Dano for a great performance) and provides a great counter to Daniel's character. The climax between these two is stunning. Their own personal "religions" happen to overlap more than either cares to admit. I love this film.

Yes yes yes!! Without that powerful ending, this movie would've been just mediocre. Day-Lewis' acting was phenomenal though. Just incredible.

Overall, good movie. Not spectacular, but definitely good.

Loved it. Fucking brilliant in every way. It was my third favorite movie of last year. I did believe No Country deserved the Best Picture, though, that happened to be my #1 of the year. It should be stressed how much better of a film it actually was over There Will Be Blood. But both were fucking classics of this era and that year was an incredibly great one for movies that only comes once a decade.

I'm not sure I liked it better than Gangs of New York or not. I saw that so long ago, and I was also much younger when I saw it. I loved both when I first saw them. I think I'd have to give Gangs of New York the slight edge though. But I'd have to see it again to be sure.

A very blah movie and kind of full of itself too.

The only cool thing about Gangs of New York was the time lapse of the New York skyline at the end of the movie...and the fact that it brought attention to an often forgotten aspect of the Civil War.

One of the best movies of the last 5 years for sure. Daniel's performance might be one of the best of all time.

just curious what it take to "know film"? does it require a film degree? a required appreciation for specific films or performances? a moving image arts degree?

what if one enjoyed the film and the performance, but didn't find it truly amazing or feel that the film as a whole doesn't completely live up to all the hyperbole surrounding it?

Ok I guess that came off wrong, but I'm not getting into that discussion.

But let's just say someone who doesn't see the greatness of TWBB, might as well go back to their rather large collection of Ernest goes To... movies.
