On a whim, I grabbed this EP by a band called Mortals from Amoeba today. They had a staff review taped to the front describing them as an all-female three piece sludge band with some seriously heavy riffs. Apparently they've been signed to Relapse and are working on their full-length, which should be released next year. The EP is pretty fucking solid. I have a download code that someone in this thread can take advantage of: PM me when you do so, so I can remove it once it has been used.

    mortals.bandcamp.com/yum enter code z28m-362k

Damn, that line up is fucking insane, as usual. I really want to do that fest someday as well. And it's in a small town in the French countryside. Good excuse for me to finally take a trip to Paris (Heather loves paris, and she's actually expressed quite a bit of interest in Hellfest in the past).

Yup. I am hoping that I can make it to one of those dates. I'm not overly familiar with Black Dahlia, but hot damn that's a great lineup.

Black Dahlia was one of my first forays into death-ish metal, aside from a couple Cannibal Corpse MP3s off Kazaa. Catchy, fun shit.

The Black Dahlia Murder was always the big crossover band for the kids at my high school who also loved stuff like Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold. They seemed to receive a lot of hate from the death metal purists because of it, but their sound was always a great mix of the old melodic Gothenburg style and modern American death metal. Always a highly entertaining live band as well. I think I'm definitely going to have to round up some old friends for that tour with Carcass and Gorguts.

So I was looking at Emperor's tour dates and it looks like they're only playing a handful of festivals this year. As of now they're only playing Bloodstock, Hellfest, and Wacken, but I noticed on Wacken's site they had this:

I wonder if it will be like that at every show?

FUCK YES. First new music from Behemoth since Nergal beat his cancer. This song is really fucking promising. Definitely sounds like this could be their best album since Demigod.

No "Trapped Under Ice".....come on Metallica

This was the most unique show Metallica has ever done. The band, contest winners, research station scientists (from Russia, South Korea, China, Poland, Chile, Brazil and Germany), and the ship crew, all crammed in this little dome out on the helipad of Carlini Station in ANTARCTICA! The energy in the little dome was amazing! Words can not describe how happy everyone was.

The band cranked out 10 songs for the small crowd including Creeping Death, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Sad But True, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Master of Puppets, One, Blackened, Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman, and Seek & Destroy.

No word on if there were any penguins were attendance. #FreezeEmAll

Bryan, I missed your Mortals post above a few days ago. I saw them a couple of weeks ago in Savannah, they were pretty solid. The drummer put on headphones and kinda killed it the whole time. I can definitely get behind young ladies playing metal (no pun intended).

I'm listening to the Windhand album again, and it finally dawned on me the cross-pollination they remind me of: Sleep fronted by Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley doing their crazed-heroin harmonies.

Heard one of those Windhand tracks on the stoner metal show on the college station last night and realized how much I really like it. Even though I kind of knew this before, I'm realizing with much more certainty that I love stoner/doom type stuff and don't have a lot of patience for noodly metal or cheese metal (some different show on the college station was playing a bunch of metal I couldn't fucking stomach at all, one of the tracks had a goddamned flute in it and I just turned the radio off instantly).

Noodly/cheese metal is good in small doses. Though even I could never get into the truly awful stuff like Nightwish or Kamelot.

War metal then? Is cheese metal kind of the NWOBHM bands that went more theatrical? Because I love King Diamond/Mercyful Fate and all that. Or is it more the Manowar style? Because I don't like that. Hair metal with axes.
