Spent the day with the new Carcass and Gorguts albums. I thought the Carcass album was a bit on the cheesy side with some cringe-worthy lyrics and vocal enunciations, but overall it was a fun listen. I'd say if anything they've morphed into a bit of a "death & roll" version of their Heartwork era sound. Tons of groove happening in there. The new Gorguts, however, instantly became one of my favorite metal albums of the year. Holy fuck did they put out one hell of a monster of an album. I'm so happy to hear one of the legendary death metal acts putting something out that still challenges the boundaries of the genre.

Well, the lyrics for Carcass can't be much of a surprise, right? That said, I agree with Gorguts. That album is masterful, there is a ton of skill being shown in the songs and they've really developed their sound even further, which is a shock for a band like them. I can't get over the string quintet.

My main issue isn't so much with the lyrics, but rather the way he over-pronounces some of the words. I mean, there's a track where he goes on for about 20 seconds just rattling off numbers, and he ends up sounding like cookie monster singing a counting song.

I'm really wondering what those numbers are supposed to be. That part was confounding to me.

If you listen to death metal for lyrics you're doing it wrong.

it's really funny going to death metal shows and there are a bunch of people who have memorized the lyrics (assuming so since they are mostly unintelligible) and sing along with every word to every song. These people are usually really, really fat.

Their shows are still a lot of fun. It's pretty much a greatest hits show at this point.

I saw Slayer in 2006, part of the Unholy Alliance Tour at Long Beach Arena. It was OK.

Well, you missed my point entirely, but maybe I didn't do a very good job at expressing it. I'm not a fan of lyrics in general. They just don't usually do much for me, no matter what genre I'm listening to. I much more enjoy the sound of the vocals, enunciations, and the way they compliment the music. I think that's one of the reasons why I've always loved extreme metal and performed in a death metal band as a vocalist for six years. The point I was trying to make was that I felt Jeff Walker was over-pronouncing some of his words, and the overall vocals suffered as a result of some, in my opinion, terrible and cheesy lyrics. The only vocalist who I feel can pull that off on a regular basis is George Fisher, because all he sings about is hacking up bodies, and that's metal as fuck.

I saw Slayer at Clash of the Titans, With Marilyn Manson, and on the American Carnage tour. All 3 times it was way more than OK.

Yeah it was more than OK. It was pretty good. Not mindblowing though, and I probably had more fun seeing Metallica two years later. Many factors affecting this verdict.

Even though I'm grateful to have seen Slayer once (last year, Mayhem fest), I'd really like to see them in a club or indoor venue.

When I saw Cannibal Corpse last year, the lead singer of one of the opening bands said "this song is about doing plastic surgery, but just, you know, sort of as a hobby - you're not really sure what you're doing." I LOL'd.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

Reunited for Wacken and a small handful of (likely only) European festivals. Even if they play one or two of the larger American metalfests I'll still likely have almost zero chance at catching them, so I'm trying not to acknowledge the reunion. I absolutely love Ihsahn's solo work though, and at this point I'd be more than satisfied just seeing him live at some point.

I've seen Slayer at the 1998 & 2004 Ozzfests, 2000 Tattoo the Earth, and at the 2006 Unholy Alliance Tour. If you're in the mix close to the stage, it's much more enjoyable. I was in the stands/balcony for the '06 show and was kind of bored with it compared to the other 3 times I've seen them.

I bet the second sells out similarly quickly. If I get myself a job at some point in my life I'll be trying to get a second hand ticket to that I think.

Profound Lore put up a track from the forthcoming A.M.S.G. album and it's a monster. They call it black metal but it's really just insane dark shit, and the sax at the end just enforces the disturbed nature of the track. If the rest of the album lives up to this song, it's going to be quite a doozy.

I listened to that and while it's pretty cool, I couldn't help but laugh when the vocals came in.

Yeah. Those vocals are ridiculous, I'll definitely give you that. But, I could actually understand what he was saying.

My copy of Marrow of the Spirit arrived today, and holy shit. No matter how many times I've listened to this album, I'm never prepared for the sheer power of the record. Deafheaven's new one is one of the only metal records in recent memory that can touch this level of power, innovation and sheer skill. Without a doubt I'm putting that on next.

Dead In Dirt's The Blind Hole is a fucking amazing grindcore record (vegan grind, even). It can be streamed as well, if that's your thing.

Yeah, I've given it a few spins and it's really damn good. The problem for me is, last year we had incredible grind records from Pig Destroyer and Liberteer, and this year Nails has kind of taken the top spot so far. There's only so much grind I can listen to on a daily basis, but these guys do have an awesome sound.
