It makes a song more 'metal', if you will, but too much pinch harmonics get stupid after a while. Like when Zakk Wylde plays Crazy Train, that shit is annoying.

It sounds like you're into the Stoner, Doom, and Sludge genres of metal.

Stoner is probably the most accessible, having almost a blues feel at times. Kyuss "Welcome To Sky Valley", Sleep's "Holy Mountain", Electric Wizard's "Dopethrone", and Acid King's "Busse Woods" are all good starting points here.

Doom is a pretty big genre that has been around since the 70s and has changed a bit over the decades. Most early Doom is in the vein of Black Sabbath. Pentagram's "Relentless" is fucking great, and St. Vitus "Born Too Late" and self titled are both masterpieces. As far as newer Doom goes I'd say Goatsnake's "Goatsnake Vol.1" , and Church Of Misery's "Master of Brutality" are the best newer Doom.

Sludge has so many branch offs I don't even know where to start. I'll come back to this one

Down, Kyuss, Corrosion Of Conformity, Electric Wizard are cool. Not much other stoner/sludge I'm crazy about.

I always thought Neurosis had a kind of post-metal sound.

    Whatever.

Post sludge, when they really start playing the heavy shit it is for the most part really sludgy. If you're in this thread and don't know Neurosis, you should really get on that. They are the be all and end all for me right now.

I'm not sure how this slipped my mind earlier, but I would wholeheartedly recommend PELICAN to fans of Baroness. they're a mostly instrumental band with a great discog of very good albums. Along the same line, I'm just getting into a band called Pet Slimmers Of The Year and their recent album ...And The Sky Fell is very good.

On the topic of recommendations, and especially since John mentioned it, does anyone have good grindcore recommendations? I really like Napalm Death, Excruciating Terror, and especially Phobia. I also like stuff like Agorophbic Nosebleed, but I'm more interested in bands that lean more towards crust and aren't intentionally being weird or funny. But I'm open to really weird stuff too.

Yes, I enjoy Pig Destoryer very much. I didn't even realize they were considered grind, for some reason.

Nasum were relatively straightforward grindcore. Though I have come across people who won't call them grindcore due to having the occasional 3 minute song and occasionally including somewhat melodic elements.

This is one of my favorite songs by them:

I don't know that I can really help on the crusty side.

HOLY SHIT That song was fucking amazing!

I was also just reminded of Dystopia, which is a great crust/sludge band.

Listening now and liking a lot. Speaking of sludge, and Eyehategod, anyone into other New Orleans metal bands like Goatwhore or Soilent Green?

Besides Down, the only other New Orleans band that I enjoyed was Soilent Green, particularly Sewn Mouth Secrets.

In any case event, I've never given them a listen.

No, they're not. They're from a couple towns in LA no one's ever heard of. I guess it doesn't make much difference. They were a huge influence on that particular scene in the 90s. If you didn't listen to the song in stinkbutt's post, give this one a try. It's a favorite of mine.

I went to this metal fest at McLaren Park a few weeks ago and discovered this band called Witchaven.... I love when metal heads know how to make fun of the whole scene; a slight break from the thrashing and swinging masses of matted hair.
