Mastodon and Gojira were awesome. Kinda lame that the show started so early, especially on a Friday night. I walked in around 8:20 and Gojira were already on. I missed a couple of my favorite tracks of theirs.

I did get myself the best beach towel ever, though.

For whatever reason, Sunn 0)))), Converge, Immortal, and Cannibal Corpse are at this years Gathering Of The Juggalos.

EDIT: Apparently it was a joke. Except for Cannibal Corpse.

So I need some help with who to see between Orchid, In Cold Blood, Moab, and Pins of Light. This is for rock scion fest this Saturday. The rest of my schedule is pretty locked up, but I don't really know any of those four bands.

Thanks, I'm going to try to make time to listen to all four bands. I'm planning on seeing King Buzzo, Big Business, Power Trip, get food, Windhand, split Bl'ast and HIgh on Fire and go home after. I have to drive for an hour and a half, and i'm not sure I can make it til midnight and then drive back to Indio.

Finally some new stuff from Wolves In The Throne Room. New album out July 8th.

    http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/...estite-mirror/

edit: fair warning, it's a 15 minute ambient track. no metal on this track, but they've always had an ambient element to their music so I'm still hopeful for the final product.

Yup. I believe they called it the ambient sister album to Celestial Lineage (hence the name Celestite.) I'm wondering if it's kind of a Neurosis/Tribes of Neurot sort of deal where you can play the albums in unison.

Meshuggah at the Wiltern last night was super intense and the musicianship of Between the Buried and Me was super impressive. Anyone else go? I could see the former in a late night Mojave slot.

This is true, and their new album just might end up being my favorite of the year.

Here's some favorite from this year so far:
Lord Mantis - Death Mask Some of the filthiest, ugliest, sludge metal I have heard in a while. Awesome.
Behemoth - The Satanist One of the best albums of their long career.
    Coffinworm - IV.I.VII More doom/sludge. Awesome.
Thou - Heathen Best year for doom/sludge metal that I can remember.
Autopsy - Tourniquets, Hacksaws, and Graves Yep, Chris Reifert still making killer death/doom metal. Might be my favorite metal drummer. Incredible.

Can't wait for the new Incantation record, Dirges of Elysium. Them riffs. Jeez.

Anyone check out the new Mayhem record?

Yeah. I really enjoyed Mayhem's new album. It's their best album since De Mysteriis.

Thems some bold words. Need to check that out.

I listened to the new Mastodon and it was alright. Better than The Hunter, but that's not saying much. Blood Mountain was the last album of theirs that I loved, I guess I just need to accept that they're never going to put out material that's as abrasive as their earlier work. I'll give it a few more spins, we'll see how it holds up.

Eh, not really. I've heard one song from the new album, really like the new guitarist/songwriter, dude named Teloch from the band NIDINGR.

There are two schools of Mayhem fans, and I think I fall in the smaller group that finds the post-Euronymous work to be more interesting than the stuff with the original creative sphere. Sure, Live in Leipzig is incredible and Mysteriis is a classic, but Ordo ad Chao and Grand Declaration of War are two excellent avant-garde metal albums that seemed to push well beyond black metal to create a new language. I dig them more, as there were other second-gen black metal acts that did the style better than Mayhem to begin with (Emperor, Burzum, Immortal and Darkthrone all put out albums that could easily eclipse Mysteriis.)
