If you like grindcore at all, check out Cloud Rat - Moksha. It's fucking fierce, the riffs are huge and they cover The Needle and the Damage Done and just nail it. If I'd heard this earlier it would have been in my top 50 of the year.

Listened to Focus by Cynic for the first time yesterday and was pretty into it. Not really what I was expected. Definitely didn't anticipate the vocoder and jazzy shit, and also was surprised that those elements actually worked and weren't awful.

I am not surprised. I was at the show where he pretty much walked onto stage and told Ron Reyes he was done and to get the fuck off.

I can't blame Ron for not arguing with the guy either.

The new Woods of Desolation album, As the Stars, takes that black metal rush of guitars and fucks around with it quite a bit. Like Liturgy, Wolves in the Throne Room, Agalloch and Deafheaven, there are heavy doses of melody that pop up throughout. The stronger production than on most Black Metal albums lends the riffs (which definitely exist and are quite memorable) tons of weight. The whole thing has a power behind it due to the great recording job and the great sense of dynamics the band possesses. With all of the heavy crushing, they take moments of silence or sparsity to achieve real beauty. I'd highly recommend it for fans of any of the afore-mentioned acts.

Sure it came out in December, but even amongst metal releases it's super obscure so I have no qualms about just getting to it now. Valdur - At War With... is the newest release from my local noise mavens. Whereas their last record, Raven God Amongst Us, was pretty much a straight NBM-style release, when I saw them perform this summer they had a very distinctive death vibe to their black metal takedowns. What results is a godawful heavy album that doesn't so much straddle lines as gleefully blast them apart and look for whats left over. I've only given two late night listens so far which means I don't have any tracks sticking out at me, but the album is just fantastic, full of heavy hatred and a huge step from what they'd done before. I like their music quite a bit, and this is definitely their best work to date. Check out out: you can pay whatever you want on their bandcamp and the album is worth a decent amount. Fuckin' cool band filled with cool dudes and killer songs.

That Woods of Desolation album is fucking fantastic. Listened to it twice already and I can tell it's a record I'm going to revisiting a lot.

Yeah it is. I need to really sit with it and give it a good, focused listen before I have a strong opinion, but it rocked me hard on first listen.

But holy shit this Behemoth album. Apparently it's their 10th album but I'd not heard of them until I saw a great review of this on metalsucks. Not overly technical tech death, the riffs are so damn catchy, memorable and heavy. There are some horns that just add to the wild fury, and the drums are fast and wicked without becoming overly repetitive. A kickass album, I'd highly recommend it.

Ha, I just came in here to post about this. I just listened to this for the first time and this album is so fucking good. I hadn't heard of them until reading reviews of this new album either.

I saw Behemoth in high school at Summer Slaughter or Sounds Of The Underground or what have you, and Nergal tore up a bible and spat fake blood on my face. Good times.

I don't care if it's only 2 of the original members, I finally get to see Slayer in a club in May. With Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

And really, as much as Hanneman was arguably THE driving force behind Slayer's recordings, he admitted to having serious arthritis issues as early as the 90s, and nobody's going to hear the new music. You'll hear classic Slayer songs sung by the original singer, backed by his guitars and supported by the tatted asshole that is Kerry King. It's gonna be a blast, and I'm fucking jealous.

Didnt evan catch the lineup on Metal Alliance 2014 till now, rad. Goatwhore put on a great show.

Re: Slayer. I personally wouldn't go out of my way to see them at this point. In terms of a replacement guitarist though, you could do far worse than Gary Holt.

What? Dude. Wow. Behemoth is my oldest and all time favorite extreme metal band on earth. Not really sure where you're hearing tech death elements in them though. They've been pretty established as one of the premiere blackened death metal bands for well over a decade now. If you're looking for a couple of other great albums of theirs I'd definitely recommend Demigod and Zos Kia Cultus.

Speaking of Slayer I was lucky enough to go to this show last month and it was amazing. Sound quality on the video does not do it justice

The new Helms Alee record Sleepwalking Sailors is really good. On the poppier side of sludge with melodies that can hang with Torche or Kylesa. The drumming on this record is absolutely fantastic and what sucked me in.

Someone recommended Slough Feg - Digital Resistance in a thread, but I can't remember which thread it was in, either way I am really liking it. I've listened a few times through at work today and really enjoyed it, and I typically don't really like this type of metal.
