Yeah dude. The production is so much better than on the first album, and it's just heavy as hell.

I went through Decibel's Hall of Fame albums and compiled all of the ones on Spotify into a playlist. There were very few missing.

The new Nails album, Abandon All Life, leaked. It's 17 minutes of pure grind brutality. There are two longer tracks (assumedly they'll close out each side of vinyl) that slow down the riffs some and provide room to breathe. The 8 blasts are impressively ugly, but these two songs are great and the reason to listen to the album. Together, they make up over half of the play time.
I need to hear this. Thanks for the heads up!

Sweetness. Beer + Metal = this weekend

ps Do you know anything about Sacristy or Imperial Triumphan? Those two are opening for Krallice on Saturday and I have no idea what they sound like...

‎Pig Destroyer Release Never Before Heard Doom EP exclusively via Bandcamp! All proceeds benefit the family of recently passed Relapse employee Pat Egan

This ep was written and recorded during the final day of the Phantom Limb sessions with unexpected extra studio time and resources. In the following years, with Natasha being released on its own and Brian no longer being in the band, our intentions of releasing Mass & Volume basically evaporated. However, looking back now, Mass & Volume serves as a great epilogue to that particular era of the band.

Pat Egan was a friend and a keystone member of the Relapse family for many of the years we have been involved with it. He devoted his life to supporting underground music and he immeasurably helped develop the bands he worked with. His untimely passing on February 18 2013 shocked the many people that his life and work had touched.

This EP is dedicated to the memory Of Pat Egan and to the loving family he left behind. RIP Pat.

**ALL PROCEEDS OF THIS RECORDING WILL BE DONATED TO THE COLLEGE FUND OF PAT EGAN's DAUGHTER KATIE**

I like the new Dillinger a lot, but even their shtick is starting to get a little generic.

Yeah, Prancer just screams "comfort zone", even more so than Option Paralysis. Hope there's more experimentation on the rest of the album.

I dove head-first into the most critically acclaimed metal albums of last year. There are a few albums I'm still getting a ton of traction from. They were all discussed in here at some point (I think) but I just wanted to bring up what killer albums they are:

Torche - Harmonicraft: I always thought of them as a sludgy metal act, but Harmonicraft is catchy and metal in equal regards. They cut down on track lengths, up the track count and just blast with a ton of melodies that have been stuck in my head since I first heard the album. They remind me on this one of Queens of the Stone Age at their peak.

Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction: Such slow, heavy, psychedelic doom metal. The vocalist sings in a clean, high tone that sounds very early Ozzy at times. The five songs are slow, dark dirges with real weight behind them. I saw them recently with another of the acts I'll talk about below (Royal Thunder) and they were excellent. Four songs in an hour, including one new one that they hadn't done before: it sounded of a piece with the material from the album, albeit with more intricate guitar work. Great band.

Royal Thunder - CVI: The band I went to that show primarily to see, Royal Thunder play "metal" only in the most old-school usage of the term. The closest comparisons I could readily think of are Soundgarden and Led Zeppelin. They write dark, bluesy songs with explosive guitar parts and catchy, memorable vocals. Their singer, a short lady with dreads, also plays the bass. They got a mere 35 minutes at the show, but were the highlight of the evening for me. They played the first half of CVI in order, and it was just as on album: dark, rhythmic, slightly psyched-out and very catchy. They brought it live, the album is beyond replayable, and I think they're gonna wind up big.

Dawnbringer - Into the Lair of the Sun God: Hot damn I've listened to this a ton. NWOBHM-y songs telling a fable about a warrior who sets off on a quest to kill the sun. It's bombastic, ridiculous and completely awesome. The story is well told, the songs are well played and everything is very heavy and righteous. Completely worth the listen.

Inter Arma's new album, Sky Burial, may be the best metal release I've heard this year. It's 8 sprawling songs that flow flawlessly from acoustic melodies to black metal to heavy-as-fuck sludgy doom and back. Highly recommended.

I can't wait to listen to the Inter Arma record after the praise here. I read the Pitchfork review of the album tonight and it led me to another album, the Body's All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood. Holy crap what an intense, dark and creepy record. They take doom and add some serious post-rock/Neurosis levels of noise and darkness to the proceedings. The vocals are a high, dry screech that sounds so eerie. Check this song out:

At least one of them has been playing with a new band in Savannah, the name of which escapes me right now, but I remember thinking they were pretty good live. I also think that means no member of Baroness lives in Savannah anymore.

It's rad and I would highly recommend it. I will talk to my buddies, and see if they are cool with one more person in our room. Right now, there is already for or five of us in one tiny room, but I doubt they would object to making the weekend cheaper. 3 day passes are still available, but you might have trouble finding a Thursday pass or any passes for the hardcore venue.

So I just read that Anciients got Jesse Gander, the same guy who recorded and produced Japandroids' Celebration Rock, to record and produce their album. From what I have heard of the Anciients album, it is a HUGE sounding record. Apparently I really dig that guy's production style no matter the genre.

The Dillinger Escape Plan haven't done anything good since the EP they did with Mike Patton. The current vocalist is terrible, I can't help but think this band would be a lot better as an instrumental act. Their first album, Calculating Infinity, with original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis was good too I guess.
