Exclamation Architectural experiment at Coachella 2009

Coachella music festival embraces an architectural experiment
    11:00 AM, February 13, 2009

    Coachella

Back in 1983, a not-yet-mellowed Elvis Costello told Musician magazine that "writing about music is like dancing about architecture -- it's a really stupid thing to want to do."

Now, thanks to a class at L.A.'s Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci-Arc), we're going to see what it's like to attempt architecture about dancing -- and music.

"Rock and Roll Fantasy: Sci-Arc at Coachella" is the name of the course. The object: design and build what the syllabus calls a "temporary spatial installation" for this spring's edition of Southern California's biggest annual pop music do, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio.

The course, which began meeting Jan. 19, calls for students to do background research by studying rock festivals such as Woodstock, Britain's Glastonbury Festival and past runnings of Coachella; they'll also familiarize themselves with event-specific temporary structures built for Burning Man and the Venice Biennale, among others.

Sciarc Separated into teams, they'll come up with an assortment of proposals, and Goldenvoice Presents, the concert company that produces Coachella, will pick one or two to be built for the festival. Sci-Arc's contribution(s) will remain standing through its April 17-19 run (one hopes), and then be dismantled -- unless Goldenvoice becomes so smitten with what the architecture students have wrought that it remains through the following weekend's Stagecoach Festival of country music.

The design and construction budget: $15,000 minimum, maybe more "if Goldenvoice decides the project warrants more resources."

Given that this year's Coachella headliner is Sir Paul McCartney, we were thinking of suggesting a gigantic, transparent viewing stand in the shape of a rocking chair. But, on second thought, maybe not.

My first year I was overwhelmed by the music on the stages, but now I make time to check out the art installations too. OK, that sounds pretentious but there is some really cool stuff. Like the Big Rig Jig last year.

Yeah, the art installations really give Coachella a great vibe compared to stuff like Lolla. The Bamboo waves last year, that giant tripod thing from the year before, the steam train, heck even the long tube of christmas lights you walked through with polarizing glasses on was good fun.

I plan on spending more time checking out the epic art. It's one of the things that elevates Coachella from the other fests, really. I hear Lollapalooza and ACL have IRL popup ads in place of art.

How did we find out about the Steam Punk Treehouse last year before Coachella?

I remember getting reaally psyched after seeing pics of that.
I hope we can get some more info on what will be there this year.

an SCIARC thingy; has something to do with a "huge blob of purpleness" being created by meshing a bunch of these together...

the huge blob of purpelness I referred to is a giant water spraying sculpture of sorts: there is a rendering of it in the attached link.

Our pals at Culture Monster have received the designs for a large-scale sculpture that will make its debut next week at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.

The work, titled "Elastic Plastic Sponge," was designed by Ball-Nogues Studio in Echo Park in collaboration with students at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. News of the project was first reported on Culture Monster in February.

In an interview today, Benjamin Ball, the lead designer on the project, said the installation will be 250 feet long and 25 feet wide, and is made almost entirely of plastic tubing. The sculpture is expected to be finished by Thursday and will have taken about 12 weeks to create.

And no doubt, this festival-goers will find this to be one cool sculpture: It's designed to spray water on passers-by.

The installation will be between the Sahara and Gobi tents. Ball said the plan is to reconfigure the sponge-like sculpture into different shapes throughout the festival, which runs from April 17 to 19 in Indio.
    *based upon tedious fact checking.

    Splonge?
    Whiskey Sour

    2 oz blended whiskey
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp powdered sugar
    1 cherry
    1/2 slice lemon

Shake blended whiskey, juice of lemon, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a whiskey sour glass. Decorate with the half-slice of lemon, top with the cherry, and serve.

This does look quite interesting. The 3d renderings half the time far exceed the execution though... so we'll have to see. Most of the 'art' installations at Coachella seem so crusty and half conceived to me.... or like shit you'd see at burning man covered in hippie dust and a far cry from some sort of precious pieces I'd like to see around such an amazing musical environment. I'd like to see the finish, fit and quality of these installations kick it up a notch... hope this one delivers.
