Stupid Coachella Rules

The thing I hated most last year was being allowed to bring in your own bottle of water the first day (at least us campers) and then the next day, they made us dump them out, even if they were sealed bottles. Then they charge $2 for a small bottle. The only alternative to that is getting a bottle and then walking across the polo ground to the small faucet near the front gate to fill up a bottle.

What other rules do you think are stupid?

The whole water situation is stupid. I've never been so I suppose I can't preach but isn't it in the middle of the desert ? Or desert like terrain. It's going to be so stupidly hot and then charge $2 for water because they know everyone will want it bad. I mean I know I'm gonna be skint so I guess I'll just be in the faucet queue, filling up empty bottles..

Stupidest thing was last year, I had to get rid of two PENS I brought in. One was a nice work Dr Grip gel pen and the other was a Sharpie for autographs. I complained but "oh you could stab somebody with those"...didn;t argue too much since I didn't want them to search even harder to find the "ahem" contraband I had elsewhere. But still- I had gotten in previous day with same implements of destruction with no problem. I know the security folk are only doing their jobs but at least they could be consistent!

I've seen some folks have to get rid of empty H2O bottles too-totally unfair, and sealed ones (at least 1) should be allowed. 2004 was 106 degrees and people were melting all over the place...

Yeah it's in a desert area (though the polo grounds is all grass) and it was about 100 degrees the second day, and to make it worse at one point one of the main water buying places ran out of bottles and I had to search everywhere to find one... not to mention the mountain of plastic bottle waste that was at the entrance. They made everyone empty out their bottles and then throw them into a pile.

I know I shouldn't be surprised by greed, but it still pissed me off.

Luckily, we were able to sneak in a backpack full of gatorade and water last year. When directed to the table to get the bag searched, we just kept walking. There were just way too many peole, too much confusion, and too few security guards to do anything about it.

I'm not saying it's guaranteed to work, but we're trying it again this year.

I agree about the water. I attended the first Virgin Festival in Baltimore this past September and they allowed one sealed bottle per person and there were no problems. Raise the beer prices and allow those of us that do not drink the last legal drug to quench our thirsts on something more appropriate. Oh, and hand out free American Spirit cigarettes too so the smoker's mouths become parched and they have to spend more cash on bottled water or else drink from the tainted fountains.

i don't mind the water situation -nearly- as much as the no in/out policy. at least for campers. the biggest downside for me at both my coachellas was that once i went into the show i couldn't come back out. if i only want to see -one- show at 2pm and nothing else until six i want to be able to chill at camp. simple as that. after having been to another festival with no such policy(bonnaroo) and having a much less annoying experience, i feel even more strongly about this point.

but oh well, i do know people who managed to go in and out anyway. i just never want to try. i guess i'll just try spending a full day in the festival at least once this year, as i've never done it before.

being forced to stay just means you have nothing better to do than drink in the shady tents with tables between the sets you want to see. so cheer up, a bit, it isn't all that bad

I've been in the same boat. The year it was over 100 degrees in temp, beer is all I drank. Good times.

Looks like it's from '06. In '05 the Sahara tent (the top one of the three long tents at middle-left) was parallel to the Gobi and Mojave tents below it. Last year they made it longer to accommodate the Madonna/Daft Punk crowd, and angled it as shown so it could still fit in the same area of the festival grounds.

Also, I think the small white domes scattered across the field were new in '06.

i still don't get why people think water is free. wtf, if you weren't at coachella, you'd have to pay for it somewhere else (your water bill, water delivery company, water bottles, ect).

People can sneak alcohol and drugs into the festival ground in what appear to be sealed containers. It's really not that hard, so that's why they do it. They're so strict on the drinking area's and making sure that there's no underage drinking - and this is a good safeguard against that.

$2.00 per drink isn't really going to break the bank, is it?

$2per water is totally reasonable....

it costs close to that much at a store - do you really think they could make it much cheaper?? handing out change (ie. coins) isn't really an option out there...

The water issue doesn't bother me. I can't remember any show I've ever been to that allows you to bring in your own beverage, period. It's always worth trying to sneak some in though.

I guess the rule I am most upset about is the no SLRs. Photographing concerts is half the fun of going for me.
