Thought some people might find some use out of this thread.

Amazon.com has some excellent MP3 deals. I'm normally not a fan of downloading music as I like having the physical cd with artwork, but with good albums so cheap it's hard to pass up. I've been buying a lot from them these last few months.

Every week Amazon has 5 for Friday, 5 random albums (new, old, good bad, lots of different stuff) being sold that week for 5 bucks.

I want to get Double Fantasy this week. A few weeks ago I got the "Slumdog Millionaire" soundtrack, which is excellent. Last week I bought Louis CK's newest stand up album.

in the upper left hand corner is the "daily deal" which is the really good stuff. Today is the new Andrew Bird for $1.99. Daily deals usually range from 1.99-3.99
They change every day obviously so don't wait on it if you want an album.
In the last few months Daily Deal got Nick Drake, Hercules and Love Affair,Erykah Badu all for 1.99

THey have good deals not advertised as well. if you see some, post them here. Unlike Itunes, a Lot of Amazon mp3 albums you can buy per track, regardless of how long they are. Some amazing jazz albums consisting of 3 long tracks sells for $10, but you can purchase the tracks individually so it's only 3 bucks.

Bit rate varies, but usually pretty good. I've gotten VBRs in the mid 200s, some CBR 256.

what is CBR?

CBR stands for Constant Bit Rate.

VBR stands for Variable Bit Rate.

CBR means that the file is encoded at the same bit rate regardless of content going into the encoder. For instance total silence receives the same encoding parameters as something like a chorus in a metal song with guitars, screaming singers etc.

VBR means that the encoder analyzes the content going in and adjusts itself to get the best possible bit rate for the music coming out. It might encode at a lower rate during a soft section, acapellas etc but will use those extra bits to encode a more complex section at a higher bit rate.

VBR is considered the absolute best value bit for bit for encoding media. DVDs use VBR encoding for both audio/video streams.

I generally encode at 320 CBR but there is very little difference between that and using the lame mp3 encoder at v0 settings which is roughly 245 VBR where the average of 245 is the target for the VBR encoder, it could go higher or lower depending on content.
