I Drive for life - did you ever read the old board?
yes sometimes and I did'nt live there ... so sorry if you've already read these before
no, I was just wondering...
I'm ***tty much over The Shins - not in sense or in theory at all - but more in their musicality - which really de***sses me. I really liked them for a good while. But I feel their music always comes from such a similar place that I "got over it" after a while...and it makes me feel shitty because I want to like them so much.
I want to listen to this new material and see if it will rope me back in - but I felt compelled to share how I felt about them to see if anyone else felt the same. I'm not a hater - but everything is subjective and sometimes you can only stomach so much "like-sounding" stuff before it starts to make you feel nutso.
Anyway - I'll check it out and report back for any interested.
Why is every time I type p-r-e getting censored? Is that a new swearword that I'm too old to know about?
Yeah it is... go **** yourself!
I miss Bill Hicks.
You live in Montana.
Jennie I agree with about the Shins except I didn't even realized I agreed with you until you posted and I thought "she's right". "coming from the same place" is exactly it. it's not bad, not at all, but after the same thing over and over I have found I am losing interest. I've not heard the new one though.
yeah i'm really tired of the shins and their two ***vious albums full of like-sounding music. i mean, their sound is so tired. it's bad enough they made two 30 minute albums, but then there's a small handful of eps and b-sides floating around and that's just over the top.
i'm all for people having opinions, and i understand some people just don't hear music the way others do. but i don't understand thinking the shins' music always come from a similar place. not any more so than most any other band. and do you guys even listen to what james is saying? are you paying attention?
then again, i'm kinda sick of reading books because i feel like the use of words is just getting played out.
I don't know if my post worked.
The YouTube embedding doesn't seem to be working.
Also I'm seeing posts from the future. It's 11:47 am and I see Gabe's post from 11:56 am. I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SAY BEFORE YOU SAY IT. But I won't say because I don't want to ruin the surprise for people.
I don't like The Shins because I saw them live a couple times this past year and they were boring as hell each time.
YouBlownowitz - Does that quote have anything to do with me?
Gabe - no, it came from an article about ...And You Shall Hate Us Because We Have a Really Long Name.

This is the video, mac.
Great album - Probably their best, but they still need to find a way to make it sound good live. (I'll see 'em in Feb, so fingers crossed)
I like the Shins, but their Lolla set was boring (or was it ACL). Regardless, the setlist was decent, but they (even more so than other bands) are NOT a festival type band. I thought they were great on SNL last Saturday, but they just don't work in a festival type setting. A little off-topic, considering I haven't heard their new album, but my thoughts on the Shins, regardless.
-----------------------
They worked quite well at Bumbershoot in 2003.
Though honestly when I saw James Mercer solo I enjoyed it better than when I've seen the full band. You could hear the vocals, mostly. And he didn't have any unreleased songs to play so it was all stuff I knew.
There's no point in seeing the Shins live. It sounds almost exactly the same and all you can do is sit there and sway a little. Maybe if i had a dinner and candlelight it would be worth it, but otherwise... no.
Yeah they never really pull off their songs live. I love all their albums, but they really need to put some effort into the show.
