    Default Beirut

So, I just acquired the new Beirut project, and it is a good listen. Would be a great band to begin trippin to at Sunset... watching the palm trees dance, and the palace of lights appear... just a thought

At first i couldn't listen to them much. But I heard some more of their stuff and it's really starting to grow on me. I'm going to catch their set for sure. if it doesn't conflict with some other show.

i'm pretty sure beirut will go on around 3pm. I want to enjoy them in the daytime in a nice shady spot while eating a spicy pie and frozen lemonaide.

yeah beirut really seems like an act that would be better during the day. whatever though, as long as he brings the full band, his set should be great.

I grabbed the new EP. I think I'm digging the electronic stuff more than the Mexico-influence tracks.

here are some rad ones. by the way, a word of advice for anyone who hasn't seen them live yet: don't expect to hear the songs the way they're recorded. when they play live, they often add instruments to some parts, remove some from others, extend sections, have certain melodies played on instruments that didn't play them on record. they really change everything around.

i'm really into the electronic one too.
i really really like the first track on Holland ("My Night With..."). also the 3rd one ("The Concubine"). the whole thing is good, but those are so addicting.

March of the Zapotec is really interesting to me though.
with CDs like Gulag or Flying Club Cup or Lon Gisland, i can listen to a few of the highlight tracks like Postcards from Italy or Scenic World (gisland version) or Nantes etc, and be satisfied and move on. the whole albums are great, don't get me wrong, i like all the stuff on them, but they're written with these magical little highlight tracks that are good enough that i can skip over a lot of it and i don't feel like i missed out. i can come back to those other tracks later and enjoy them.

but the odd thing about March of the Zapotec is that i don't see the same appeal of individual tracks. none of them stand out as the "best track on the album" or anything, and if asked to recommend beirut songs to a potential fan, i wouldn't include anything off of it. but at the same time, when i listen to the EP from start to finish, i find it MORE rewarding than listening to gulag orkestar or flying club cup from start to finish. like their other CD's and EP's are about the individual songs, and this new EP is about the whole picture.
    i'm just really digging it.

i would even say this: Gulag Orkestar, Lon Gisland, and Flying Club Cup are CD's for folk fans and indie fans. March of the Zapotec is a CD for Beirut fans.

Yeah, I agree. March of the Zapotec is not accessible to casual fans. But you're right about it being a satisfying listen. He really captured the feel of regional Mexican music, and that comes from a born and bred northerner who has lived on the border for the past two years.

well i don't think it's so much him capturing it, but i read that the band on the album is a 19-piece Oaxacan funeral band, so he's kinda set.

which just makes me jealous that i don't have access to such musicians to work with...

Well, Venice and My night night with the prostitute from Marseilles are Official releases of songs that have been around for awhile. But other than that is all new stuff.

Either way, this is just about the most unmissable set of Coachella, Can't wait for it, amazing band.

Thanks for sharing the vids, as well as the informative posts. I am getting more interested in seeing them, but I am worried that Beirut and Leonard Cohen could conflict.
