Default ..help the Aussies (LA to Vegas, Vegas to Coachella)

    G'day from Down Under.

Well, this will be our first visit to much-talked about Coachella Festival. Yes, long overdue...but it's happening.

Now, down to the nitty gritty.

Can you lot tell us things to see during our drive.

    We are doing 2 sector:

    LA - Vegas
    then
    Vegas - Coachella (Festival)

Please inform us of your fav spots along the way (on both routes)....be it, quirky, touristy, outdoors, indoors...

    Tell us.

    Help us.

    Advise us.

    Guide us.

    Cheers,
Duvel and The Big Man (Melbourne, Australia)

hope you guys have a fantastic trip. It's going to be a blast. I assume you are renting a car?

the trip from LA to Vegas will take you about 4 1/2 hours and it's pretty boring. Ever see Fear and Loathing? It's just like that. Ghetto ghetto ghetto and then blam, you are in the desert. It's a pretty smooth drive and i like seeing the landscape change. You can grab a bite to eat in Baker (or am I think of barstow?),right in between LA and Vegas the most ridiculous town ever. I don't think anyone lives there, its just a giant rest stop with every single kind of fast food you can imagine. 3 mccdonalds within a square mile. it's ridiculous.

Vegas is a trip. Everything is open late, you can drink openly on the streets, which is not the case in LA. Stay on the strip...if you are low on funds, go to Luxor or Excalibur or Circus circus and they will have cheap rooms. Finding a room for $100 bucks on strip won't be a problem. Tell the front desk you are from Australia and you can easily get a pass for the nightclub at the hotel you are staying at. The clubs in vegas are really fun and always have special guest Djs. Vegas is so big now it's difficult to see it all in a weekend. if it's your first time you have to walk around and check out these hotels:

    Wynn
    MGM
    Paris
Bellagio (great water fountain show in the front)
    Mirage (tiger exhibit/volcano show)
    Treasure Island (pirate show)
    New York New York

get drunk and run around. it's a blast. if you can afford to see a show, do it. Any of the Cirque du Soles' are fantastic but will run you $100-150. even nude shows can be a bit pricey i believe

drunk American women will love the accents, so take full advantage of that. Be careful of gambling too much. You're going to lose it all anyway

LA has everything and anything you can possibly want. Born and raised here so if you want, tell me the types of things you like to do or food you like, i can help you out with specific places. You gotta hit up Venice beach, see at movie at Archlight Hollywood if thats your thing and maybe check out a show at the Hollywood Bowl. Drive down Sunset Blvd from Santa Monica to Hollywood. hike up the griffith park observatory... ummm yea, too much to mention what are you guys into?

actually you will most likely stop at Bartow @ the Lynnwood exit. Then if you want a picture with the worlds largest thermometer you'd be stopping in Baker. I'd also buy a lotto ticket at there...many a lucky millionaire dropped a duece in that sh!thole.

what days will be you be in Sin City? there's a huge difference in the experience depending if you are here Mon-Thurs or Fri, Sat, Sun. There's generally a kinder gentler crowed during the week since it's the weekend for those of us who work in the hospitality industry & the clubs usually forego on the dress codes & guy/girl ratio for entrance....lower cover (if they even charge) too.

In-N-Out Burger > On the drive from LA to Vegas.

Hard Rock Hotel > Is the greatest place on earth. Make sure you hit up the pool parties, clubs and dining establishments. (Rehab, The Joint, Body English, Pink Taco)

The Palms > Pool parties. And at night hit the clubs. (Palms Place is awesome, Playboy club).

MGM > check out La Femme or any of the Cirque de Sole shows on the strip. They have a dope pool party called Wet Republic.

Speriment Rhino > Vegas strip club.

The Las Vegas Sign Graveyard and The Welcome to Las Vegas sign.

You can also check out the Double Down or The Beauty Bar.

All these places have websites. Use google. And Spyonvegas.com

and bring the fuckin Saints with you...

Sadly most of the weekly pool parties don't start until May/June....
If you aren't into the club scene but want to get a good drinking binge going I'd head up to Ghost Bar instead of Playboy/Moon....line is not as crazy. almost all of the casinos now have a "lounge" of similar capacity w/ loud music.
Speriment Rhino is a nice spot but does tend to get overcrowded. If you go to Treasures early, you can get the free buffet & 1 dollar beers...hard to beat, just don't blow your wad. I like Seamless cuz it turns into an afterhours club (w/ dj & lapdances) around 3am'ish...the other afterhours club i'd goto is at Dre's. if you want a smaller afterhours scene to go the Peppermill for breakfast and cocktails in their bar.
after this you'll be ready to roll in the coachella dirt.

The Stratosphere has excellent views if you can stomach the heights. There are some roller coaster rides up there too!

Might want to take a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. Hoover Dam is that way too (from the movie Transformers). If you really want your mind blown away, check out the Grand Canyon Sky Walk on the Hualapai Res.

i love joshua tree ... one of the neatest places around. check out this map (and navigate around the website, it is the official national park website) - it isn't really "on the way" but appears to be a short side trip: http://www.nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/directions.htm

i always hit up joshua tree from phoenix so i'm not familiar with how to get there from la ... maybe someone from la can help us with that.

haven't been to death valley yet but it is on my list of things to do. i'd love to hear what you think about it if you stop.

enjoy your time in the states =)

It's well worth your while to bring/rent/buy a GPS. GPS's have dropped so low, you can pick one up at a 7/11 for under a hundred bucks. It will help with the siteseeing.

On the way to Vegas: Check out the goofy ghost town of Calico, between Barstow and Baker. It's actually 20 miles outside of Baker. It's a small mining ghost town that has been "restored". You can see it from I-15. The real story is that it was a very small mining town that went bust. The guy that owns Knotts Berry Farm bought it and donated it to the County of San Bernardino. Its hokey and just what tourist want to see. An Old West American Ghost Town.

In Vegas: Atomic Testing Museum. Its actually near the strip but its a great history into all the A-Bomb testing done in the Nevada desert about 100 miles from Vegas. Red Rock Canyon National Recreation Area. About 25 miles from the strip (but only a few miles from Red Rock Station Casino). Its a beautiful area to hike in and relax when you want to get away from gambling for a bit.

Death Valley is an all day trip but fascinating as hell. Gas up whereever you can bring lots of water.

Vegas to Palm Springs: If you're feeling adventurous, cut through the Mojave National Preserve. South to Baker (grab a gyro at the Mad Greek), gas up, get plenty of fluids and head south into the Preserve. Check out Kelso station. Then snake your way down towards Coachella and you'll run into the north side of Joshua Tree. Stop and take a hike somewhere.

Hope this helps. Google everything I've mentioned to see if its something you're interested in. Good luck.

    The more Aussies the merrier!

We did Coachella -> Vegas in 07 (and again this year as bringing a couple of friends who want to do the drive) but weren't in a hurry so did it over a couple of days and took the indirect route. Some of the roads we took were like the ones you see in movies where you're in the middle of the desert with no one around and suddenly a pickup truck appears out of nowhere and tries to run you off the road! Anyway, getting sidetracked here.

Joshua Tree - worth driving through, different landscape to anything else you'll see on the drive.
Lake Havasu City - home of London Bridge but not much else unless you've got a speed boat.
Kingman - historic Route 66 town but I think that's all that brings the tourists, not much else.
Hoover Dam - if you've got the time I recommend driving over it and getting some photos. You can also do a tour that takes you down into it. Although when we were there they were building a bridge over the canyon to stop people driving over the dam so might want to check out whether it is still possible.

    See you at Coachella!

One more notable piece of info for anyone traveling from Las Vegas to California on the 15 South. Every Wednesday & Thursday of EVERY Week until sometime in April (guessing late April) the southbound 15 Freeway is CLOSED from 10am to 2pm for freeway blasting at the state line.
Leave early or leave late otherwise you will be spending time at Primm (state line). Ride the roller coaster while you are there

hell yeah, welcome aussies! I'm freakin stoked that you guys are makin the trip out! My ex-girlfriend and I met 2 aussies from Melbourne and perth, jayrod & gary back at the 2007 coachella. Fuckin love those guys man, that was one of the best coachella years for me. We met them at the Tiesto stage front and center, ended up chillin with them at the campground and the whole weekend! We still keep in touch today somewhat. Glad you can make it. Yeah definitely hit up Venice Beach 'cause that's classic L.A. style. Also I don't know what kind of music you guys mostly enjoy, but I am an electronic music lover so check out www.junglescene.com before u guys come to L.A., this is a website where many, if not all, of the Drum & Bass, dubstep, and hiphop shows at club venues or underground venues in L.A. will be posted there, and there is many going on in the L.A. area many times during the week, and always on the weekends! Hope to see u guys at the fest. Best of fun!!! Cheers, mate!

Hey guys, I will be in LA at that time and looking to head out to Coachella. I used to live in Melb but living in nth NSW beaches now. Any chance of carpooling with you from LA???

I went to Palm Springs last year but just missed Coachella, so have done the drive straight from LA to hike around Joshua Tree but not to Las Vegas.

    cheers

I was headed from Vegas to LA on a Wednesday a couple of weeks ago when I hit this. Luckily the highway signs in Vegas alerted me to this. I took a detour out of Vegas of 160 West to Pahrump and then down to Baker. This also puts you at California 127 which if you go north, puts you into the southern part of Death Valley National Monument.

I've been to Vegas twice in the past few weeks and the signs indicate it has only been Wednesdays from 10am - 2pm and both North and Southbound I-15 are closed.

The funny thing is when I took the detour and hit Baker going south on I-15, there was NO ONE headed southbound and lots of cars going northbound (about 1pm on that Wednesday). It was very eerie, like people were fleeing LA and I was the only one headed for it.

Again, if you decide to do this, get a GPS.

we did the same thing last year, ken' oath it was great.
Once in vegas we did a day where we drove out to the west rim of the grand canyon. That was good fun, especially the last couple K's on the dirt road it was like full on dukes of hazzard shit we were fishtailin round the bends and just caining it. Hoover dam was pretty (un)impressive but that'll be on the way to the Grand Canyon.
At the GC, fuck it was fun lobbing rocks into the canyon (as childish as it sounds).
From Vegas to Coachella I think it took us about 7 hours in the mustang. A very long uneventful drive. I thnk the joshua tree/DV Natl Park is out that way but we missed it. In Indio we stayed at the Renaissance Esmerelda hotel. It fucking ruled, all the bands stayed there and we drank in the pool till about 3 than drove in to 'chella. So much better than camping IMO.
On the way back from Chella to LA there was a rockin go cart track to the left of the freeway (fucks me if I can remember) but that was like 20 minutes from the airport (LAX).

Enjoy mate it's a rockin time!!!
Recent studies at Yale have shown that being an asshole is detrimental to one's health. Professor Sweetlove, a Psychology professor, came on record as saying:
"Assholes and local desert rats tend to live shorter lives and have less consensual sexual relations than non assholes. It could be due to lower testoserone levels or a chemical imbalance in the brain but some people are just wired to be.... well.... assholes"

    Eep--

So you're going to get in the car after a 12-13 hour flight and then drive another 4 hours? Alright... have you ever done that before?

I have. I did something similar when I traveled to your part of the world, and what a mistake that was!

I would recommend you get a connecting flight to Vegas... it'll take an extra 45 minutes rather than 4 hours and since there's nothing to see along the way anyway, then BAM you're in Vegas.

You could possibly even get a flight from Vegas to Palm Springs...

Then a flight back to LA.

All in all, along with the cost of renting a car for a foreigner, probably about the same and a lot less headache.

There generally isn't a live tracking website for that part of Cali as you would find for LA/Orange counties. You can be sure Wednesdays are the Caltrans official freeway closing days on that part of the 15 freeway. Thursdays are an "unoffical" day...whenever the Caltrans gods feel they need to explode more dynamite.

If you plan on going to the Palms Casino in Vegas which is strategically located on the opposite side of the 15 fwy & the very congested Las Vegas blvd, be sure to buy the all access wristbands ($20-$40 bucks depending on day) that will get you into all 4 night clubs...no waiting in line either.

dj jazzy jeff is there tonight and tomorrow is paul oakenfold (pls don't flame )

When in Vegas and you have some time I would recommend to go up the I15 to visit south west Utah. Zion NP or Bryce Canyon NP are great (the whole Grandcase Escalante area is awesome). It takes about 2 hours to drive there (mind the time difference).

If you go the back way from Vegas to Coachella you will go thru Joshua Tree. Plus you can make it to Coachella and hour faster then Taking the 15.
