Default Best acts you hadn't heard of before Coachella

Ever since I saw the flier for this years Coachella, I knew I would buy tickets, which I now have. There are many bands i knew i wanted to see, but it is almost impossible to know all the bands on the list, so I have proceeded to download a lot of new bands I have never heard of. With that being said, what are your favorite bands you have never heard of before Coachella this year. I will say I like Manu Chao a shitload. This list will be different for everyone so I will have to think for a few on the bands i put on this list. and i still haven't heard every band yet. Post what you liked that I missed.
Edit: I was gonna post a poll, but it has to be within five minutes of posting the bulletin, and it took longer than that to figure ou the bands i was gonna put on.

I have never "not heard of" a band before I go to Coachella, primarily because once the lineup is announced I do a little research and listen to the very smart people on htis message board for enlightenment.

Had people really never heard of the Polyphonic Spree before they played?

The Dresden Dolls...I cursed myself for not having known about them earlier, otherwise I could have seen them at the Troubadour, Viper Room, and El Rey before they started purposefully avoiding LA :P

The way I read it the OP was talking about bands not heard of at the time of the lineup announcement. That is the bands that you look into because they're playing Coachella.

Like in 2005 with Autolux for me. I hadn't heard of them then they were playing Coachella so I listened to them, enjoyed them and saw them live and then saw them again at Coachella.

But it also seemed to me that the thread should be about 2007 and bands you've gotten excited about after becoming aware of them via the lineup.

Not that this would be the only thread to not be what the OP intended...

For my answer to my interp of the question is none, so far so that's kinda worthless.

But I have been listening to more stuff from The Coup and Brother Ali because they're playin the fest and they're both sounding more and more awesome.

The 2007 lineup of bands is what I had intended for. But Coachella is new to me, and all good bands that you were impressed by will work. This is for broadening everyone's horizons. Go download it, or buy it, you choose.
I go to shows and festivals.

Also I was scared to see the Polyphonic Spree. I didn't think I'd be able to tolerate that much happiness and joy and smiling from a band. I hadn't been taking the set breaks and the heat into account. They were pretty awesome.

I didn't enjoy Sigur Ros' set but it did convince me to buy their album. Something about it convinced me that while it just sounded weird live (and walking in the middle of the set in the back of the tent) that it'd work so well on CD... and then live again when I was familiar with the music.

2003 was the first year I really studied the lineup beforehand (after walking out of the Mojave as the Mars Volta were about to go on.) I hadn't heard of Ladytron before the lineup came out and was really looking forward to their set... which I missed all but half a song of due to the lateness of that tent.

I'm had heard of Erase Errata before 2004 but not heard more than one song so their performance at the fest put them on the map for me.

For 2005 hadn't heard/heard of Autolux, M83, Razorlight, the Fiery Furnaces or Gang of Four.

For 2006 it was Platinum Piped Pipers, the Duke Spirit (I'm not sure, actually. Andrew?), the Octopus Project (seeing them again on Monday!) and Gnarls Barkley.

Coachella has introduced me to many fine bands.

Yes. I end up hearing most of the bands before the big weekend.

Bands I had not heard of prior to the lineup announcement (or a strong rumor/unofficial confirmation) but got into after:
    The Dresden Dolls
    Death Cab for Cutie
    M.I.A.
    possibly M83
    Peter Bjorn and John

Bands I had heard of before but did not become a fan until after the lineup was revealed(maybe I had previously dismissed them or only knew a song or two or just knew their name but not their sound):
    Muse
    Ladytron
    The Flaming Lips
    Air
    Pixies
    Mogwai
    The New Pornographers
    Girl Talk

    one word: Faithless
yes, they never come over here from the u.k. but i had the opportunity to catch their first U.S. performance ever several years ago in Boston. they are an urban/hip hop/dance group that bring out a full 6-9 piece lineup that will blow your socks off.

First band I ever saw @ Coachella ...

Saturday April 26, 2003, 1:20 PM Mojave Tent - South

Immediately went over to the Virgin Tent and bought their disk, and they've been one of my favorite young bands ever since.

    Other bands:

    The Duke Spirit
    Radio 4
    Autolux
    The Rapture

and .... I totally forgot about stellastarr* ... who I researched before Coachella 2004 and still adore to this day ... (and I'm seeing tonight)

After I found out about them via the Coachella lineup, I saw them in early 2004 at the Middle East downstairs in Boston ... the opening band that night was The Killers, before Hot Fuss was even released. My how their fortunes have split.

OK, I'm on board. Fo rthe most part, I have at least heard of every band.

BUT, M83 was one that I had only heard of and walked into the end of their set and was way way impressed. After only seeing one and a half songs, I went out and bought their CD.

There are three basic levels and all are being talked about here:

    1. Not heard of when the lineup was released... then learned to love.
    2. Heard of but not familiar with before the lineup was released... then learned to love.
    3. Not familiar with before seeing them at the festival... and being amazed.

So far the category 1 bands for 2007 for me have not been good. There are still a few left to go. And a lot of DJ/electronic artists that I'm not concerned about. There are EDM artists I would like to see but it's not that important that I find more.

There are some category 2 bands like Grizzly Bear and Brother Ali that I had heard a few songs before the lineup but couldn't really say I knew them that well... and now they're growing on me. There are some more that could end up in this category but we'll see.

Discussion of category 3 artists only makes sense for completed/in-process festivals... and I've already done my list above.

M.I.A., and Autolux were the best thing I have seen without knowing who they were beforehand. M.I.A.'s set was even better just because of the random bee swarm on the right side of the tent. Anyone remember that?

Last year I stumbled upon Jamie Lidell trying to get a good spot for Gnarls Barkley and he rocked the place. If he ever comes to town I'm certain I'll go see him again.

Although The Killers have become the bigger band, I hope that stellastarr* sticks around for a few more years. "Harmonies For The Haunted" is an excellent CD, and I became a fan thanks to their 2004 afternoon set at Coachella. I was glad to see them again last year, and I hope they return when their next CD is released.

Likewise, I would add The Kills to my list. Their live set was incredible, and I hope to have the opportunity to see them again.

As this is going to be my first Coachella, I can only talk about artists that I didn't know about before the line-up was announced, but have checked out since....and I really want to see Pop Levi. Musically, he (they?) reminds me of a British Perry Farrell singing for T-Rex.
