Here are a couple pics from this weekend's Red Bull Soapbox Race. Nothing fancy, but I like the expressions on the drivers' faces.

I'm pretty new with cameras. So can someone recommend a good, non-professional, camera(s)? Mainly to use for concerts. A good indoor and possibly night(if the concert is outdoors and at night) camera(s). Most 'consumer' type cameras I know you can't control the ISO. Unless you've got the night feature on. And a camera with brilliant video/sound quality too. Haha.

I bet if you did an Advanced Search on cameras, you could find a few threads on this very topic.

Might be out of your price range, but the Canon G-series is the top of the line "point and shoot" camera type out there (better than their powershot S-series). I think the new G11 is coming out soon.

Yep advance search on Canon cameras and you'll find what you want. Agree the "G" series is excellent and Canon cameras are durable in my experiences with them.

    SERIOUS QUESTION:

whats everyones view on the Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM?

Im looking for a relatively cheap but nice portrait lens and from my research this seems to be the best bang for my buck. (im looking for something under 1k). My only issue with it from what im reading is the fact that it has no image stabilizer. Ive also read that its somewhat of a light lens so i dont think this would be too big of an issue. Does anyone have any insight on it?

Also, i would probably use it for sporting events and music events. Is the lens fast enough to get a nice picture at such an event?

Thank you in advance for any info you can give me.

concert lens if shooting night, indoors, and with no flash (usually the rule) - I always have a 1.8 or 1.4 with me.

most digital cameras allow you to control ISO in more than just the night setting. Landscape seems to be my go-to, but it depends on the camera company. If you're just looking for a P&S, I really like Nikon's coolpix functions and the ease of using them without going through the manual. Canon tends to be a bit more complicated, but offers a ton of features *but* it's more expensive. I can also vouch for fuji coolpix. It's really up to you. I would recommend you go to Fry's and play with the cameras on display and see which you like.

Hot diggity! i was at Samy's in Costa Mesa about a month ago and i was asking about the G11. The guy helping me said he knew nothing about it. You might be seeing a used G9 on Ebay soon (although now i think about it, that's making me kinda sad because it's been so good to me).

if you are on a crop frame why do you want such a long lens?

even if you want a long portrait lens I would think the 85mm f1.8 would be better, it is faster, and also a little less long,

the portrait classic is the 50mm f1.4.

remember, on a crop frame that 100mm is now actually 160mm...

Now, if you want to shoot sports, it would be a great lens. It is fast, and focuses accurately if your camera has good af...

Thank you very much for the information!

I went down to the camera store (Canoga Camera in Canoga Park. really great camera store if anyone needs to find a nice one) and after talking with the guy there and testing out each lens i think the one im going to go with for now is the 50mm f1.4

Agree. Very laborious, unfriendly browsing. Your photos are beautiful, but I don't have patience to look at all of them.

The 50mm is the classic prime lens. for protraits, an 85mm (full frame) is best it's just long enough to flaten the face (50s give a slight fish bowl effect) but gives you a large enough field of view to to compose your subject without moving a football field away.
With DSLR's there is a frame factor of about 1.5, so a 60mm full frame lens will give you an equivalence of 85mm. but of course, all lens choices are the prefance of the photographer.

I'm about 80% sure that I'm going to buy a Nikon D5000 this weekend. Does anyone have one and want to tell me what a terrific/horrible idea this is?
