Can you find out what lens she currently has? I think the standard kit lens for the D90 is an 18-200mm f/3.5-5 or something like that. But it sounds lile that's not what she has?

Also, what is your budget? A good lens can cost as little as $200 or as much as $2000+.

Thanks Courtney, I knew you'd be on the case.

I know it's a fixed focal length lens. But I'll do a little recon to find out which one in particular.

My budget is max $400 or so. But if you tell me there isn't a lens at that price point that is worth a lick, then I'll consider another gift. I've seen some Nikkor lenses that are around the $270 mark or so...but again they could be crap.

Ok, great. Once you know what fixed focal length she has, it will be much easier to make a recommendation.

I would recommend the Nikon 55-200mm DX ($200) or the Nikon 55-300mm DX ($365). They are both good lenses, the 55-300 just zooms a little closer and is built a little better. Is it going to be used for sports?

This site has reviews and useful info...
    http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/dx-...team.htm#18200

If it's not being used for sports or far distance shooting, the 18-55mm DX lens that comes with many Nikons is also a good lens. I think it's around $200

Ok, after a bullshit story as to why she needed to bring her camera, I found out she has a Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens.

That's a nice lens she has.

I would also say for under $400, that 55-300mm is a nice all-purpose walk-around lens. sk8r408 is right, in addition to the zoom, that lens is built MUCH better than the 55-200mm (the zoom is a bit loose for my taste), so worth the extra coin imo. (I own both)

That's funny, I'm actually asking for that lens for Christmas.

Yeah, the 35mm f/1.8 is great. That's pretty much my go-to lens in terms of random walking around and stuff where I don't want to carry a big expensive zoom lens. I actually prefer it to the 50mm f/1.4. It's probably the best bang-for-your-buck out of all the Nikkor lenses.

The 55-300mm lens is a good pick, however if 99% of what she is doing is taking family photos, she is rarely if ever going to use a 300mm.

Thanks Cdubs, courtney, sk8r. I'm going to go forward with the 55-300. Family portraits now, but we take many nature walks and would love the ability to have zoom function, not to mention as her daughter gets older I know sports, school performances, etc. will come into play and the zoom will be nice to have.
