Oh my GAWD, Miss! I know that show. I remember the first time I saw it vividly:

My friends and I were sitting around talking with Adult Swim as background noise, and suddenly this show came on and the intro killed me. So I told everyone: "SHUT UP! SHUT THE FUCK UP!" and then it said Darkplace and I don't think I stopped laughing until the end. After that I watched a couple more episodes as they were airing and thought: is this a new show or a really bad 80s TV show? And I don't think I ever figured it out. I didn't do a lot of research in those days so the show kind of faded by the time the NBC Thursday Night Comedy Block starting snagging away all my attention with its brilliance. I think I'll have to do some **legal downloading and watch that show tonight. Thanks for bringing back fond memories, Miss.

It was an unusual and dare I say, nice touch of Von Triers to be in front of the camera at the end of the first episode, trying to convince his audience to continue watching the series. I'm definitely going to continue.

I just added Rounders and Reservoir Dogs to my queue. Since there are no new decent movies coming out I am going to watch all the old movies I missed while being a mom and stuck watching Barney.

Just watched Marvencol on Netflix on demand last night, utterly amazing. It's a documentary about a guy who was beaten into a coma, wakes up nine days later with no memories and severe brain damage, and then constructs and photographs an elaborate model town to deal with and channel his emotions. Really touching and it's incredible to see how the "stories" of the characters in the town reflect his personal struggles, victories and anxiety at any given moment, especially when it's not particularly clear if he has the mental capacity to realize he's doing this. It's also touching to see how he integrates his real life friends and family into the town, he reconstructs one friend's favorite store that had gone out of business so the doll version of her could always enjoy it, and sets another friend's doll up with Steve McQueen at her request.

Most interesting thing I've seen in a while. Queue it up.

A lady who works at the video store I sometimes rent from recommended that film to me, said it was the best doc that she'd seen in a while. It was indeed very interesting - the image that I remember is him saying 'I love you' to his female dolls before going to sleep at night.

Poor guy, it's obvious that he is really plagued by the fact that he had this marriage and other relationships before the brain damage that he can't remember, and his acceptance that in his state he will never be in a romantic relationship again. The epilogue at the end about his choice to live in the Marvencol world instead of the real world was tragic, but at the end of the day he has also created something so beautiful and interesting.

Heh, I prioritize my viewing based on what is going away from Instant soon... but it seems like usually that means I end up watching stuff I don't really enjoy and had been procrastinating on anyway.

Mostly I have been watching small amounts of really crap softcore porn on Instant, while reading depressing books. You know, for balance.


But the other night, I watched The Runaways on the recommendation of a friend. I wouldn't say it is a great movie, but it was entertaining. The chick from Twilight makes a pretty tolerable Joan Jett.

I agree that The Runaways was a fun movie. I saw it at the theatre, and then when it popped up on Instant, I watched it again. It's got great music, and I loved the dynmaic between Joan Jett (Twilight girl) and Sherie Curry (Dakota Fanning).

I have been unable to watch anything on my queue for the last couple weeks because every film I watch starts buffering every 5 minutes or so, I have never had this problem. Anybody been experiencing this at all?

Not on Netflix, but on Hulu Plus, they have season 1 of Misfits which is the show Gemma has been raving about for over a year.

I watched the first two episodes. Really enjoyed the premiere, then inexplicably episode 2 is a goofy sex comedy. Does it get back to the tone of the first episode? Should I be expecting Lost / Heroes type plotlines or is it just going to be a town full of episodically inclined weirdos?

It is mostly in the tone of the first episode, the second one is probably one of the weaker notes of the season.

The show doesn't really have the budget or inclination to tackle the world outside the kids' immediate line of sight. There are a few monsters-of-the-week, and there's no real large scale arc in the first series beyond the character stuff, although the payoff in the finale makes that pretty satisfying in itself. The only ongoing arc as such is the increasingly urgent matter of dealing with the probation worker problem.
