Comets on Fire

We have Ben Chasny now bitch... Weep, because he is the best of the best of Comets on Fire. Plays house shows up here all the time. Dude is awesome.

Music sucks up in Seattle right now. Pitchfork likes Truckasaurus, but they suck. So does that stupid smelly hippy band that thinks they are boy's choir. There are a couple noise acts that are OK, and Son of Rose is pretty wicked. Mostly it's a bunch of protopunk knockoff shite.

All the good San Diego bands, are just that, already pretty famous... Drive Like Jehu and everything else related, obviously... then The Album Leaf, Pinback, Black Heart Procession, Grand Ole Party, Three Mile Pilot (kinda underground?), The Locust, Sleeping People, The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, etc. etc.

But here's one still-great undiscovered band... they have 100K myspace plays, so that's still relatively small... I guess one might call this "post-rock," just because they're mostly instrumental, kinda mathy, and all kinds of epic...

Agree with you on Grand Ole Party, The Album Leaf, and some Pinback, but the rest are out of my personal taste. San Diego's just not a haven for anything that's not hardcore, metal or (in some cases) ska.

That's wild. Six Organs is in Seattle. I still haven't seen him live.

And, LA bands that I love have been getting more hype, such as HEALTH, Abe VIgoda, Mika Miko, The Mae Shi and Autolux.

The Muslims are great, I was thinking of mentioning them. I'm not really a Delta Spirit fan, but my mom's been obsessing on them lately. I could see them showing up at the bottom of the bill at Coachella this year. And I've never heard The Modlins.

I would also like to mention a band called Lanterns, who are kind of associated with Japandi (they always play shows together anyway). They have sort of that early 90s British indie rock/shoegaze sound, it's kind of typical-sounding, but it's really quite good. I could see them getting out of the underground someday. They play shows around here all the time.

And, just to plug these guys... they're called Fantastic Magic, they're pretty odd but they're a great psychedelic freak folk/dream pop kind of thing, sort of in the vein of those Brightblack Morning Light/Phosphorescent/Feathers kinds of artists... and they're great live... I'm just a little biased because I know them.

It's funny, last year they opened a show at the Casbah for Vampire Weekend who in turn was opening the show for Grand Ole Party, before VW was famous. I couldn't go but a friend of mine went. Now look what happened...

I think the whole Pinback-related scene is pretty well known, as well as the Drive Like Jehu-related scene, who kind of overlap with the former (Rocket From the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Pitchfork, Heavy Vegetable, The Sultans, Orbits, Thingy, Three Mile Pilot, etc.)... a lot of people outside of San Diego seem to really dig those bands. But would you consider that all "hardcore"?

But yeah, if San Diego is known for anything, it's the whole 90s hardcore/noise rock thing... DLJ, Plot to Blow Up Eiffel Tower, The Locust, those kinds of bands are really the only thing that give our city much of a name-recognition kind of "scene."

I think of the holy trinity of San Diego to be John Reis, Rick Froberg, and Rob Crow... everything they touch is pretty much gold.

I know The Entrance Band and Fool's Gold. I actually really like The Entrance Band, and I think they've toured with a couple of bigger acts by now? I can't think of who off of the top of my head. They did headline a show down here though last summer. I didn't know they were from LA, they sure have that Bay Area sound to them...

yeah i do know that. I go to his parents music store all the time, The Folk Music Store. I don't know who actually runs it anymore but I got my first guitar from there.
