Thread: What to Do in LA?

  1. #1

Default What to Do in LA?

My wife and I are planning to fly into LA a couple days early this year? We'd like to catch some of the local scene. Anything in particular we should look into on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays?

We'll see everyone at the camp ground on Thursday. Looking forward to another great year.

Although this may not be what you meant by the scene, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA) is opening an important exhibit on the artist Dan Graham -- his first retrospective -- this spring. If you're at all into contemporary art, I'd highly recommend it. Although I believe that after Los Angeles it's traveling to New York and the Minneapolis, so if you live in either of those cities you can always wait to see it.

N.B., I believe MOCA is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so you'd have to go on Monday.

All suggestions are appreciated. I'd like to hear about anything interesting to do during the day (modern art exhibitions, museums, parks, places to eat, vintage clothing stores) and am very interested about possible venues to see shows on weeknights. Oh by the way, we're super geeky nerds who think we have good taste in music, if that helps.

    Thanks again.

vintage clothes= west hollywood. RHCP's high school is in the general area. same with kat von whore's shitty tattoo shop. the pier at santa monica is kind of a quintessential LA tourist spot.
plan ahead and use public transit- it'll save you lots of money.

I've gotta agree with crazzz here and suggest bringing/renting a car. Preferably a vintage convertible for driving down the PCH. It's Los Angeles, afterall.

OK, I just happen to have a list of LA things to do that I have written for friends visiting, this should definitely be helpful, and if you have any questions, just let me know!

*griffith park/observatory - closed mondays, but definitely way awesome to check out if you get a chance... especially around sunset. (A MUST)
    http://www.griffithobs.org/

*amoeba records - this is a must for music fans. they have a HUGE selection of new and used vinyl, cds, dvds, posters, etc. right next door is the arclight theater which plays a good selection of independent movies as well as widely released films. the arclight is a pretty class theater, and you should probably buy you tickets in advance because they have assigned seating. (ANOTHER MUST)
    http://www.amoeba.com/
    https://www.arclightcinemas.com/ArcLight/faces/Home.jsp

*melrose ave & fairfax ave - there are a lot of shops around this area: clothes, music, food, etc. nothing too special, but nice to walk around.

*olvera street - tons of mexican shops, food, etc.
    http://www.olvera-street.com/

*hollywood blvd & highland ave - this is a very touristy area, lots of restaurants, shops, etc. this is where grauman's chinese theater is (with all the celebrities footprints). the jimmy kimmel show also tapes in a studio on hollywood and highland. if you go to 1iota.com in advance, you can see who will be on the show and you can get free tickets. usually the tapings begin around 5 or 6 and go for a couple hours.

*the grove/farmers market - this is a really nice shopping center, lots of good stores, and the farmer's market is has the best selection of food.
    http://www.thegrovela.com/

*not sure if this is really what you'd be into, but LA is home to many theme parks, my favorites being disneyland and unviersal studios. fyi, in 2009 disneyland is letting you in for free on your birthday... so if your birthday happens to fall while you're in LA, you get in for FREE!

    MUSEUMS (my favorites):
    *the getty - http://www.getty.edu/
*moca - museum of contemporary art - http://www.moca.org/
    *natural history museum - http://www.nhm.org/

    FOOD:
*pink's - I personally think this place is overrated, but that's not to say that its not good. and it is definitely an LA classic. well known for their always long line and lots of celebrities come by.
    http://www.pinkshollywood.com/

*tommy's - the best if you want chili cheese burgers, chili cheese fries, chili cheese dogs. they have several locations in the LA area.
    http://www.originaltommys.com/

*in n out - not sure where you're from, but if you had not had in-n-out, it is definitely a must. classic burgers and fries. located all over LA.
    http://www.in-n-out.com/

*roscoe's chicken and waffles - this is another LA classic. I do not know anybody who does not like chicken and waffles. the chicken/cheese omelet is also good. a couple locations in LA, and they're open late.
    http://www.roscoeschickenandwaffles.com/

*grand central market - a huge open-air market with tons of options for food, this is an old LA classic.
    http://www.grandcentralsquare.com/

If you don't want to be in the big city all day, an area I definitely would recommend is Long Beach. There is a ton of great food, shops, hangouts, and artsy stuff. I like Long Beach because it isn't as trashed as LA, and I think it has a whole lot more culture. Hope this helps! If you want to know more about LA or LB, just ask!

Where exactly are you staying? Hollywood? Burbank? Santa Monica. You have transpo? You got $$$?

    Monday?
    - Club Spaceland. Free music.
    - Steel Panther (Metal Skool) on the Sunset Strip. Glam Rock Tribute Band.
    - Karaoke at Barney's Beanery. The one is West Hollywood. Or you can go in any time during the day. Lots of musical history there.

    Tuesday?
    - Da Poetry Lounge on Fairfax.
    - The Kibitz Room at Canter's Deli.

    Wednesday?
I don't know. Pick up a LA Weekly. I'd definitely recommend The Getty Museum. Most of the art is "eh" but they got a sick view. $7 parking. Admittance is free.

Note: By the way, I haven't done all of these things in a minute so you might want to double-check to make sure they're still happening.

Venice is where it's at. Eat at La Cabana or Casablanca or bbq spot Baby Blues. Rent bikes and ride along the bike path to the Santa Monica Pier and beyond!

Just watch out for stray dogs, bullets and the homeless.

Red Lion Tavern, The Chalet, The Griffin. Some old hollywood - Formosa, hit jones across the street as well. Beauty Bar can be fun. Sick of the Saturday crowd there but Thursday has a better dj and crowd.

EDIT: Breakfast - Hit The Griddle on Sunset and Fairfax! For late night snacks 101 Cafe on Franklin roughly between Gower and Vine. Couple scenes from Swingers was filmed there. Good juke box and food.
