Ron Asheton (b. July 17, 1948 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, d. January 6, 2009)[1] was the guitarist and co-songwriter with Iggy Pop for the rock band The Stooges for their first two albums, and later appeared as bassist for their third, Raw Power, when he was replaced in both instrument and songwriting prominence by The Stooges' new guitar player, James Williamson. However, with the Stooges reformed, he once again appeared as the band's guitarist.
Apart from The Stooges, Asheton also played in the bands The New Order (not the UK band of the same name), Destroy All Monsters, New Race, and more recently with Mike Watt, J. Mascis (of Dinosaur Jr.), Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and Mark Arm of Mudhoney among others (as The Wylde Ratttz), on the soundtrack for the Todd Haynes film Velvet Goldmine, which starred Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Asheton also acted, appearing with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre star Gunnar Hansen in Mosquito which came out in 1995 as well as in two other films, Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo and Legion of the Night.
Asheton already had five years practicing the accordion behind him when he began playing guitar while he was ten.
He is ranked as number 29 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.[2]
Asheton died of a reported heart attack on January 6 2009.
I'm beyond grateful to have had the chance to see him on stage where he belonged, with the Stooges. I'm friends with people who've known him, both back in the earliest incarnations of the Stooges, and in his later life in and around Ann Arbor. I've never heard an unkind word said about the man.
Safe journey, Ron...
That is shitty news. I saw the Stooges at the Fox Theater in Detroit. What an awesome show. I am glad I got to see them.
fuck. The above were from Vegoose 2007. The show was fantastic. i got to see them again at the Wiltern a few months after and it was even better.
Like a year ago Iggy Pop and The Stooges did a free show for us Miamians on the beach. Like literally on a stage on the sand on the beach, my friends and I shared a bottle of cheap wine and were completely blown away at the awesomeness that ensued. Thank you for that and RIP
