Shabazz Palaces fuckin' killed it tonight. TheeSatisfaction, the openers, were like the two parts of Lauryn Hill spllit into two people; they're also the female vocalists on Black Up. When Shabazz came out, I was surprised to see a dedicated percussionist, and also to see Ishmael behind a laptop, sampler and CDJ set. For the whole set, him and the other dude constantly jammed their respective instruments, and they stretched and plied the Shabazz songs to the breaking point. They were so fuckin' good that I just wish I could see them again tomorrow. It was the kind of thing where I was disappointed in the crowd until the end, when they erupted in huge applause; they were all so in awe during the regular set they didn't know what to do.

    HUGE show.

Big part was the impeccable mix. The show definitely had the heaviest bass I've felt since the Altar set with Boris and Sunn, but somehow they were able to get Ishmael's vocals to cut through that perfectly.

I don't know if anyone here's been following him, but the half-Irish, half-Mexican, full-bearded white rapper known as Speak has been on fire lately (he also ghost-wrote "Gucci Gucci" but listen to these tracks before you hold that against him).

this song came out today. features a verse from Vince Staples and a beat from Syd The Kyd:

and this one features the best Spaceghostpurrp verse ever:

His album comes out in November. Check out applebird.org for higher quality versions of the tracks above and loads more.

I'm listening to the new Talib Kweli "R&B" project Idle Worship album Habits of the Heart on Spotify. They made it a big deal they were making it available on Spotify 3 weeks before the album's release date which is actually today. I just got a chance to listen. I really like it.

I watched the last SNL with Drake and his stage setup for the first song was pretty sweet. The screens displayed his lyrics as he was rapping them.

I'm waiting for an out of this world review on this new Wale album before I check it out. I like him, but I wasn't a fan of his first album. I'm not a Rick Ross fan so not that Wale is a Maybach guy I don't know how much I'll like any of it.

I really like the Idle Worship/Talib Kweli album, but I'm a big Talib album. Some of the tracks are more POP sounding than I usually prefer, but Res has a great voice and Talib comes through on his verses so it's hard to not hate on. I've seen buzz phrases like genre bending and hybrid production to describe it. Listening to it makes me want to see and hear it performed with a live band. Looks like they're coming to Yoshi's in SF for FOUR shows.

That ASAP is amazing. Grab that.
The 2 chainz is only good if you like trap rap. If you do its really good.
I'm not a fan and haven't listened yet but Nipsey & Freddie Gibbs have gotten good reviews.
You can pass on the Wale.

They were cool. Mighty was crowded as hell that night which made it harder to walk around and find a spot to dance. It was a great club set to be at on a weekend night. I was expecting and hoping for more of a show from the two of them. They really tag teamed and bounced off each other at Rock the Bells during Nas' set raising the bar for each other like "OH! Whats he (Pete or Premo) going to play next?!" I never really felt that from the set at Mighty. Both had energy and charisma and really worked the crowd, but there was just a certain spark missing. Maybe I was just tired as fuck that night. I kinda enjoyed myself a little more during Shortkut's opening set.

I can't link from my phone but Yasliin and Talib aka Black Star are putting out a Dilla/Madlib influenced album in 2012!

There will also be a Yasliin Bey Presents LP dropping.

    Fuck yes.

    http://www.ology.com/music/talib-kwe...tar-album-2012

We've all watched the Colbert Report performance where Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) linked up to drop a new Black Star track, and after all of the speculation of a reunion album to follow-up '98's Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, Talib announced in an interview with MTV that rumors are true, which, you know, made everything else in life suddenly become irrelevant for the moment.

"I am working to put out a Black Star project for people to buy sometime next year," Talib said. "Me and Mos [Def] are focused on independence and quality of sound. We're really into a Madlib/Dilla thing right now. Anything you hear from us is probably going to be that type of sound. And it's about independence, so we are trying to find out the right mediums to get the songs out. When you heard 'Fix Up' on Colbert, it wasn't even mixed; it was something we recorded a week before. Now we're at the mixing stage of the song and we are going to put that out ourselves. We have a bunch of songs recorded. We are just trying to figure out the best way to release them, whether it's going to be one by one, EP or album. Right now, the plan is to release 'Fix Up' and then Yasiin is working on a Yasiin Bey Presents project and then we'll see how it goes."

So, the basic synopsis is that Yasiin and Talib are putting out a Dilla/Madlib influenced album, and that we'll also be getting a new LP from Yasiin (hit the jump to hear some new tracks). Like I said, all other facets of life have now become irrelevant.

Are they getting beats from Madlib/Dilla? Have Hi-Tek copy the sound? Only work with producers like that?

I've heard those two names thrown around for years, but I couldn't recognize their beats if you played them. What popular songs have they produced?
