    Default MUST SEE NEW YORK???

My girl is going up to New York for a conference and will be there for about a week, including New Years Eve.

This is her first time there and I thought I'd ask you all for some advice and maybe some off the path/non-tourist trap attractions you could recommend to her.

She loves food as well and any place that serves good eats is definitely a must for her, within reason of course.

She will be staying in Times Square if that helps with recommendations.
    Thanks again for any help.

Go to Lombardi's pizza in the Lower East Side. THe first pizzeria. and then after that go to Rice to Riches across the street. They have amazing rice pudding.

Also, for pizza, try Grimaldi's in Brooklyn, under the Brooklyn bridge.

If yer nice, bballarl will teach you how to talk like a real New yalker.

And, it's really cool to walk through Central park when the sun is starting to go down in winter and there aren't that many people there because it's so cold. It's bleak and beautiful.

Yes. It is so beautiful. Late November through December is a great time to visit New York.

Also you have to see little Italy. Every time I walk through there I feel like I'm in the Godfather 2.

Lombardi's is good for the history (and the pizza is good) but it wasn't the best pizza i had in New York. Just to be not even slightly helpful, i can't remember the names of any of the other ones i went to.

Little Italy is great, but I think it's called Rittle Chinnery now.

Also, for good Pizza though not necessarily "NY style" pizza I highly reccomend Two Boots. Preferably the one in the East Village at the Pioneer Theater. I forget the exact cross streets.

Williamsburg is where it's at for pizza... There is some awesome, greasy, cheap shit down there that is fantastic. It's also a good area to romp around for hole in the wall bars and dives that have reasonably priced drinks. If you start out early enough, you can get your record store fix wrapped up there as well.

When I went to NYC for the Animal Collective listening party in October, we ended up getting out really late and were really hungry. Everywhere we wanted to go was pretty much closed (it was a weeknight), but in Times Square, we found a pizza place that was open. For two slices, it cost me $16. WHAT THE FUCK. Make sure she doesn't go there. I knew it would be a ripoff, but DAMN.

And if it's her first time there, she HAS to do the typical New York thing. That would be sad if she didn't. Make sure she sees a show, goes to MOMA (I've gone there every single time I've been to NYC; it's like a ritual), sees all the dumb landmark buildings...

But yeah. Seeing a Broadway show is pretty much manditory.

As far as seeing the Broadway show goes, if she's open to checking out an older show that isn't the hot ticket, there is the TKTS Discount Booth in Time Square that sells tickets for cheap. i saw The Producers for 50% off.

If she has walking weather, just walking is cool.

Spamalot and Avenue Q are two older ones I'd recommend.

I tried to get student rush for August Osage County in October and I missed it by two people

I saw Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, but that day had been so long and busy and jetlagged that me and basically everyone in my group dozed off during the show.

Thank you!! My girl will be most appreciative of the suggestions. And you know Kitt Kat you're right, it would be a shame for her to go to a city like New York and not go see some of the traditional places that everyone goes to.

Wish I was going but oh well, hopefully the city doesn't intimidate her too much and she has a blast. Thanks again for the suggestions and if anyone can think of any more feel free to add!!

By the way how crazy does it get on New Years eve there?

Much of the Manhattan of my wild youth has been usurped by chain clothing stores, but there's still some bits and bobs in the East Village and other downtown locales I still recognize.

For good contemporary Thai, she might try Klong (www.klongnyc.com) on St. Marks. That would take her away from where she's staying, so she'd have to be comfortable with getting out of the general Times Square area to get there. That's the sort of recommendation I can make, outside of where she's based during her stay - I know loads of amazing restaurants, though much of Times Square is devoted to national chains.

I've got friends who live in Hell's Kitchen, which is a stone's throw from Times Square. There's some good restaurants over there, as well as New World Stages, which has a few theaters. Rock of Ages @ New World is supposedly a fun night out, though I suppose that all depends on how much you revere (or appreciate the suck appeal of) hair metal.

That's just off the top of my head...

Roxy's Deli in Time Square is awesome. The pastrimi sandwich is ginormous and awesome. They also have the best cheesecake and carrot cake I have ever had.

Last time my sister and I were in NY we decided to do a walking tour with a NYC native. They have a program where you can hire someone that lives there to take you to the little known spots. We were big sex in the city fans and the guy we hired was a gay man who lived in Chelsea. It is like a $50 fee and whoever you hire will take you to whatever areas interest you. Our tour guide was the best because he took us to a bunch of places where they filmed sex and the city. We hit the meat packing district, a bunch of underground shops, Chelsea of course... It was the best way to see NY. It was my 3rd time there and I saw more in that afternoon then I had in any of my previous visits.

I would highly suggest going to the St. Marks area no matter what. Great vibe, cool shops and there is a good restaurant called Stingey Lulu's that has good food and all the staff are trannys. It's a good time.
