I have had this Samsung laptop for the past three years and recently it has been overheating due to the fan either just giving out after a while or just not starting. I shoot compressed air through the vents and no dust comes out so it must be underneath the hood. Would taking my laptop apart and giving the fan a clean be the easiest solution, especially before I purchase a new fan? I can't afford a new computer at the moment so a quick and cheap fix would be great.

Randy I never did buy a pc. I went online and there is not one of the ones I want anywhere in Colorado or the nearby states for that fact. Sometime I am a bit too cutting edge. Guess it was a sign eh......cr****

Laptop cooling pads. Get one with plenty of vents in it and at least a couple large fans underneath, they run about 35 bucks. Replacing fans on laptops is a pain in the ass, it'll cost ya at least 100 bucks anywhere.

I bought one in the summer with two fans, but maybe I purchased a less than ideal one since it still crashes. I will have to shop around more. Thanks!

well, looks like i'm returning the nexus 7. i'm a fucking retard and didn't realize it ONLY works with AT&T; i just thought all the sim card information was there to confirm that you could use it with at&t. i feel really silly about that; however i was planning on just using WiFi connections until i realized how difficult it is for restaurant servers and the like to tell you their WiFi networks and passwords. i'd be ok with keeping it actually if it weren't for the fact that the device does not have the proper java script to unlock protected PDF documents, which is the main reason i bought the tablet. *edit* after doing more research, it appears no tablet will unlock the protected PDF ebooks that i use, not even a microsoft surface or an ipad. i should have done more research, oh well. maybe i'll keep it for use at home since it's pretty handy for surfing in bed.

Randy I would go straight to you with this question but I don't want to constantly bug you with shit so I'm starting here -

My boss wants me to find out how much it will cost to fix her Macbook Core 2 Duo from 2006. The battery case on the back has popped out on one side and will not close. Looking closely, it seems like one of the batteries expanded and pushed out the cover. The whole case is still in place (the other end of it is shut), but it looks like the lid has been pried up away from the rest of the case on one side. I'll have some more pictures shortly. Any thoughts? And should I just bring it to an Apple store? Or find some random dude on CL who fixes Macs? Or Randy?

Yeah if you're getting something with a touchscreen then Windows 8 is tolerable. Still gonna be buggy for at least a while longer though, but for most of its core functions--running internet, whatever the fuck else people do with computers--it works smooth.

Tessa, take that into a repair shop. It might be okay with just replacing the battery but usually when a Macbook battery explodes like that there's some collateral damage. Apple store is about as good an option as any.

Yes, I tested it with a coworker's battery and that's all I need. Going into an apple store now. Woohoo for easy problems! I'm still a newbie with this Mac shit.

I have an old 2006 MBP that's still kicking and have no real need to replace. I've had two batteries die like that. I'll cede that Randy may have seen this more often but in my case they were just old and when those mac batteries get old and run hot they have a tendency to bubble out like that. In neither case did mine explode. I simply ordered a new one on ebay. The last one is a cheap knockoff because I don't plan on keeping it much longer but it works fine.

If she has time to spare you can probably find a cheap replacement on ebay for ~$30. If that doesn't work you can spend the big money at the apple store.

I'd buy a good 3rd party one. In fact I did for my last machine. Ended up being somewhere around 100 bucks.

I had a 2007 Macbook White that got the swelled battery problem, took it to the Apple Store and they replaced it free of charge as a hazard.

There is a method where you can release the gas that caused the swelling using a non-metal cutting implement (metal will cause a spark), simply slicing a hole without puncturing the cell of the battery (pulling on the plastic outer case with tape to do so). The gas may build up over time, but you can untape the hole and release the gas again. Not necessarily recommended, but it does work.

In the last six months I've gotten a MacBook Air 13" that I'm in love with and a PC Media Server that I kind of despise. I bought Windows 8 hoping it would bring me back into the fold, but it's so freaking terrible it blows my mind that they released it as a serious answer to Apple/Google at all. Picked up the Media Center upgrade, and it lacks functionality in every way possible over third-party solutions. Yuck. I'm still forcing it on myself so I can retire my old Sony Vaio laptop/media server, but I'm strongly considering making it a Linux box with Ps3 Media Server and calling it a day. At least then when I have mystery bugs ruin my day I can learn something from them instead of just cursing at Microsoft.

And I'm a convert away from PCs who's made a career as a Windows Admin and Tech. Just can't believe how wrong-headed W8 is.

So I have a 2007 aluminum Intel 20" iMac. Time Machine was acting up for a week or so, saying it couldn't back up. I should have taken heed at that point but I just shut it off. Not long after the entire computer just shut down and attempts to restart it proved unsuccessful, usually hanging on a white or blue screen. (To be fair throughout its life it would sometimes hang on the white screen during standard reboots, but one more reboot was usually sufficient.)

I followed Apple's online instructions and eventually inserted the install disc. Disk utility told me the hard drive is toast. Assuming there's no way it can be recovered, will any new hard drive work or does it have to be Apple-specific? I think the old one was a 250GB serial ATA 7200rpm.

Luckily most everything should be backed up on an external drive via Time Machine. However there's that last week or so...I know I downloaded/saved some stuff but don't remember what. I know a data recovery guy but I'm not sure if it'd be worth him taking a look at it.
