Default Proposal to ban the word "emo"

This stupid word has been in the popular lexicon for what, 10 years now? And still, Joe Sixpack has no idea what the fuck it means. This does not in the least seem to disuade him from using it. I've heard "This song is so emo" in reference to Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Radiohead... its just absurd.

I propose a full-out moratorium on the "e" word in discussions of this year's lineup. An emo band would never be invited to Coachella. DO NOT EVER ACCUSE A BAND OF BEING EMO. All threads which deterioriate into a discussion of whether said band is emo should be locked, and the perpetrators perma-banned for being ignorant.

Yes, I know what "emo" music actually refers to. And it sucks, in my opinion. But (thankfully) very few bands today are actually honest-to-god emo; it would be career suicide.

    /end rant

    Emo Music
Emo has its roots in music. As punk bands began putting more emotion into their lyrics, a new style was born: emo style. Early emo music was decidedly more hardcore than today’s music, which has been commercialized as emo moved from the underground to the mainstream. Emo songs differ from punk due to the focus on raw emotion. Heartbroken lyrics or angry lyrics pump the emotions while a high-energy beat and emotionally-charged chord progressions take the listener up and down. Harmony and melody are often used in emo music where they are typically absent from punk rock. Punk provokes anger and action, whereas emo expresses vulnerability.

Some emo bands include Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Embrace, Jawbox, Bluetip, None Left Standing, Frodus, Promise Ring, Jawbreaker, Mineral, Texas is the Reason, and Impetus.
Its like the Infinite Monkey Theorem, if you put X amount of monkeys in a room with a typewriter and ask them to give you Shakespeare 99% of them will fling their shit at you while the other 1% will masturbate in the corner.

yep, like many genre names things get bastardized and distorted along the way. Emo from the 1980s and emo of today are totally different genres and have nothing in common really.

Generally, when people use the word "emo" they referencing what is known as emo today in popular culture. ie. Tight Jeans, long bangs covering one eye, eye make up, (possible) slit-wrists and terrible taste in music.

Haven't both Thursday AND Thrice both played Coachella as well? They are definately emo. Many also count Pedro the Lion (02) and Coheed & Cambia (06) as emo acts.

Bingo, "emo"--whatever it means or entails--has become just another fad bastardized and exploited by corporate hacks trying to make money off of lemming young people. I'm looking at you Hot Topic.

And the singing in that music usually sucks.

This is a Goth (not to be confused with an Emo).

There are a lot of emo-influenced bands making their way back onto the stage, though, so perhaps there is some hope of saving the "emo" brand and no need to jump the gun just yet. For instance, The Get Up Kids and Pop Unknown are reuniting. Jimmy Eat World is going to be touring by playing their influential modern emo album Clarity in full. Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker also has a new project, and I think I heard somewhere that Far are also reuniting.

Also, I think at this point it's a stretch to even liken emo to goth these days. In my opinion, that garbage power pop balladry combined with its guy-liner, tight jeans, hair that makes no sense and heroin-addict body type is more like the stuff you saw during the 80's hair metal era.

The Cure is indeed emo, but NIN is emo as well. Very dark emo.

I didn't realize people still referred to bands as emo. Emo is a shit title that was created to explain the unexplainable because it didn't fit the current model of previously defined music. Its a fucking ridiculous title and it really has no real sure definition. I've head the name thrown around to describe bands like The Get Up kids and in other instances describe Ladytron and the Faint.

I hate it, its a testament to the half baked notions of this generation.

See this is the shit i'm talking about. I'm not going to dignify Randy with a quote, but same deal. Emo is an offshoot of punk. It has absolutely nothing to do with goth, or post-punk, except that it's all "crybaby music".

emo now means all things gayish. So Radiohead, NIN, Bob Denver, The Cure are all emo. Joking aside though, Joy Division was emo before the term existed.
