Question #1 - Is the new Kanye West album the markings of a great artist following his muse and creating a unique soundscape for rap utilizing autotune and abandoning samples almost entirely or is it just a self-indulgent masturbatory piece of shit?

Stop reading Spin.
I agree. It's neither. It's an enjoyable album and the lack of samples is kind of refreshing. The voice effects can get a little tiring, though.
Listening now for the first time and while I hate the autotone as much as anyone, I'm enjoying it. It's clear poor lil Kanyeezy is depressed, probably because Daft Punk stopped touring...
AutoTune can suck my nonexistent dick.
I go with choice 2.
The more I listen to the album the less I like it... But that said, I think it's his most interesting work yet (as a whole album that is).
The autotune gets ridiculous after a while, but songs like "Paranoid" strike a perfect balance with it. Just subtle enough to punch through from time to time and keep his voice (which isn't very good) slightly off balance in an interesting way.
I think "Tell Everybody What You Know" highlights the problem with the album... Lil Wayne puts him to shame... And it makes Kanye sound silly and it's clear that he's not terribly interesting as a performer.
I think "Coldest Winter" is great, and the primary reason for that is that it doesn't overstay it's welcome.
As a whole I really enjoyed the throwback nature of the album, and I loved that he is switching things up... Even if the album doesn't really have any staying power. "Paranoid" is easily one of my favorite songs this year.
I haven't listened to it yet.
The autotuning is cool at first but it gets really tiresome halfway through the album and just annoying by the end.
Listen to some Atlas Sound while you are at it... A lot of people I know have gotten into Deerhunter that way.
I didn't think I really liked Deerhunter, but then I heard the last 2 1/2 minutes of "Nothing Ever Happened" and changed my mind.
For your health
When you have time to just sit down and listen to an album, do that with Microcastle. If it doesn't catch you, and especially Nothing Ever Happened, I'd be willing to concede that they're not for you.
Still, even if you don't get drawn in, make sure to see them when they're inevitably at Coachella this year, because their recent live shows have been boss.
i hate deerhunter and i dislike that wmga guy. FDAIMF!!!!!
